A former Cowboy is going out west to meet up with some former Sooners.

Mason Cobb, who entered the transfer portal this month, announced his commitment to Lincoln Riley and USC on Monday night. Cobb led Oklahoma State with 96 tackles and 13 tackles for loss this season while also recording two sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.

Originally out of Provo, Utah, Cobb went to Oklahoma State as a three-star recruit in the 2020 class. He had high school offers from Arizona, Louisville and others.

He spent his first two seasons on campus behind Malcolm Rodriguez, who is now with the Detroit Lions. Cobb recorded 10 tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack during the 2020 and 2021 seasons while biding his time.

In 2022, Cobb had three games with double-digit tackles, including a 16-tackle performance against TCU on Oct. 15.

When the transfer portal opened Dec. 5, Cobb was the first known OSU player to hop in.

“First and foremost I want to thank Oklahoma State University, Coach (Mike) Gundy, Beni Tonga and the rest of the coaching staff for blessing me with the opportunity to play the game I love,” Cobb wrote when he entered the portal. “Thank you to all my teammates who I can now call brothers. We’ve grown tight and I’m very grateful for the time I’ve spent with you all. I want to thank the fans and friends I’ve made for all the love they’ve shown me in my time at OSU. The Cowboy culture is real and strong.

“I will forever be grateful for my time in Stillwater. After long conversations with my family members and mentors, I would like to announce that I have officially entered the transfer portal with two years of eligibility left. I will always be a Cowboy at heart. It’s time for me to move onto the next chapter in my life and make the decision that’s best for me.”

Cobb becomes the second OSU transfer to find a new home after Braylin Presley announced his commitment to Tulsa last week.

The Cowboys have done the best they could at replacing Cobb through the portal, adding Tulsa transfer Justin Wright — who had 101 tackles for the Golden Hurricane this season — not long after Cobb announced his departure. The Cowboys also have two high schoolers committed who are expected to play linebacker in Stillwater in Poasa Utu and Ike Esonwune.
