Grading the Uniforms: Week 1 vs. Tulsa

Published

on

Last year’s grading system made it difficult to accurately represent my true feeling about the overall look of the uniform combinations. A lot of that had to do with the intimidation factor, which is essentially giving a higher score for something because it looked mean. Combinations like White-Orange-White suffered because of this. Upon review of the uniform combinations, I thought White-Orange-White was one of their top-five looks from 2016.

All of that to say I’m going to change up the grading format this year to more accurately express how I feel about the uniform combo of the week.

Helmet: A-

New Mexico State, you mad, bro? Pistol Pete is an iconic logo and I’m glad that the full depiction has made its way onto a helmet. The thing I like most about this helmet is the stripe pattern. It’s new to us but has an old school feel to it. That old school stripe concept combined with the Pete logo that I was used to seeing growing up is probably the equipment manager’s way of saying, here’s proof that this should have been a helmet back in the day.

It was a little weird to see the mirror image of Pete on the right side of the helmet. I get why it was done, but the mirror version of Pete’s hat looks weird to me.

Combo: A+

White-Orange-White is arguably the most Oklahoma State combo we have, so of course I’m going to love it. My heart might have skipped a beat after seeing that helmet because something inside me triggered an image of that stripe pattern on the white pants. Even without the stripes on the pants, it looked really great. It was a strong start to the year, so now I’m irrationally excited for Friday night’s first road combination of the year.

Overall: A
