Gundy Ranks High On Wins Per Year List Nationally
Mike Gundy is nearing his 100th win at Oklahoma State. Maybe you’ve heard about this? We talked on Tuesday about how only six active coaches have 100+ wins with their current teams. Gundy is about to make it seven.
But as some of you pointed out, it’s a little unfair to throw Mike Gundy up there with Nick Saban, Gary Patterson and Bob Stoops in terms of wins with the same school without also looking at wins per year at that school.
So I compiled a list of all the coaches who have been with their current school for five or more years and looked at wins per year at that school. There are 63 coaches who are at least in their fifth year. Only 21 have won 8+ games a year on average.
For the sake of this exercise my formula was wins divided by years minus .5 years because, for example, Urban Meyer has really coached 4.5 years, not five. Here’s how it all shook out.
Also, I admit winning percentage would have been a truer measure because some conferences get conference title games and some don’t, but to be frank, winning percentage isn’t as fun as wins per year and I thought the difference was probably negligible.
That top five group is something else. I suspect Bobby Petrino and Dabo Swinney will come close to making it seven by the end of the season. Just a murderer’s row of elite college coaches.
The next tier is impressive, too. I didn’t think Kevin Sumlin would be that high up, I suppose. Gary Patterson, Brian Kelly, Mark Dantonio and little ol’ Mike Gundy sitting right there with 8.6 wins a season. Of coaches with 10+ years, this ranks fourth. Of the 63 coaches with five or more years of experience in CFB coaching, this ranks No. 14.
Both incredibly impressive numbers.
