How Thursday Night’s Blowout Compares to Other OSU Home Openers Under Gundy

Published

on

Home openers in the Gundy era are quite full of high-scoring beat downs.

Since Gundy took over in 2005, the Cowboys are unbeaten in home openers, with Oklahoma State’s 58-17 victory Thursday. The Pokes haven’t lost a home opener since 1995. The closest since 1995 was in 2005 when the Cowboys squeaked by Montana State, 15-10. The largest drilling since Gundy became the head man came in 2012 when the Cowboys thumped Savannah State 84-0.

In that time, the Cowboys have outscored their opponents 708-206 in the first game of the season in Boone Pickens Stadium. Of those 14 wins, eight have been against FCS opponents, with only two coming against Power Five schools (Georgia in 2009 and Washington State in 2010).

If you’re looking to overreact off the point difference of this one game, Thursday’s 41 points separating OSU and Missouri State puts you somewhere between the 2006 (OSU +42 against Missouri State) season and the 2007 season (OSU +36 against Florida Atlantic). The Cowboys went 7-6 both seasons.

A fun stat that happened 104 years ago: Oklahoma A&M beat Phillips 134-0 in its home opener. Here’s a breakdown of the Gundy era home openers.
