Injury Updates for Wrestling Postseason
The Cowboys have been pretty dinged up off and on this year, so I thought I’d give an update on where OSU is at with their injuries going into the conference and NCAA tournament.
At 149, there was already a battle for the starting spot when Geo Martinez was hurt and Boo Lewallen was winning most of the head-to-heads, so he very likely would’ve been the starter anyway, but Smith did confirm we won’t see Geo back and Boo will be the starter at 149 for the Big 12 tournament.
Coach Smith seems unsure at 157. Jonce Blaylock injured his knee in the Bedlam dual a few weeks ago. He could be back for the Big 12 but it will basically be a game-time decision according to John. He said they won’t likely know more or less until weigh-in’s if it will be Jonce. If Jonce is out, Tristan Moran will be the starter.
Jacobe Smith should be back and ready to go at 174 for the Big 12 tournament. He’s on the mat drilling, etc…, but in the process of healing his knee up he got sick keeping him out a little longer than they initially thought he’d be out. He suffered a knee injury in the dual with Missouri. John did say that they almost wrestled him against Fresno State so he will be good to go for the Big 12 tournament.
Preston Weigel at 197 was cleared and has been back on the mat since Monday. According to Smith, Weigel is still getting back in the groove at this point and getting his conditioning and some other things up to speed. But he should be healthy and able to wrestle full speed. When you’ve been off of the mat for that long there are naturally some growing pains and adjustments when coming back and unfortunately he doesn’t have a long timeline to make those with the Big 12 tournament next week.
