Instacap: Cowboys’ Offense Anemic in TCU Loss
OSU’s defense didn’t get much help.
This one will sting for a while in Stillwater.
Oklahoma State fell to TCU 29-22 on Saturday in Fort Worth. The Cowboys’ defense created a season-high five turnovers, but OSU’s offense wasn’t able to score on any of them.
Amen Ogbongbemiga forced his third fumble of the day with 3:30 to play. That gave OSU the ball on TCU’s 26, but in four plays, the Cowboys went backward a few yards.
That was the second time OSU’s defense handed the Cowboys the ball in TCU territory in the fourth quarter, but the Cowboys gained only a handful of yards before punting from TCU’s 39 four plays later on the other instance.
In between those two turnovers, TCU scored its go-ahead touchdown. That sparked the Cowboys’ offense a bit, as the Pokes drove down the field, getting all the way to TCU’s 2-yard line.
After a holding penalty, Sanders threw an interception to Trevon Moehrig in the end zone.
The Cowboys’ offense finished with 418 total yards and a loss despite winning the turnover battle 5-1.
Perhaps more concerning than the loss is that OSU might have lost what has become one of its few sources of offense in Tylan Wallace.
Wallace got by his defender in the third quarter and scored on a 55-yard reception on a nice Sanders pass. However, Wallace was slow to get up and didn’t return to the game. The official word was a lower extremity injury. Wallace missed the end of last season with an ACL tear.
The Pokes’ only points off turnovers came when Brock Martin returned a first-quarter fumble for a touchdown.
For as much as OSU’s offense struggled, the Cowboys also struggled in the kicking game. Without starting placekicker Alex Hale for the third straight game, OSU missed an extra point and two field goals.
In his second start, Dezmon Jackson toted the rock 29 times for 118 yards and a touchdown.
Spencer Sanders finished the day 17-for-35 for 268 yards, a touchdown and the inception. He also ran for 30 yards on 11 carries.
The loss all but shatters OSU’s Big 12 title hopes. The Cowboys will finish their regular season in Waco next weekend.
