Jawun Evans Embraces Chris Paul, Isaiah Thomas Comparisons

Jawun Evans has been busy this summer. Between individual workouts with NBA teams and training, things are moving pretty fast. And they’re about to start moving even faster as the NBA Draft is less than two weeks away.

Recently, during the ASM Sports Pro Day in Las Vegas with Impact Basketball, Evans sat down with DraftExpress to talk about his game, his part of OSU’s offensive resurgence last year and what he brings to a prospective NBA suitor.

“I feel like I’m developing well as a shooter,” said Evans. “Being here, working. Working on my shot.”

Other than his size, Evans’ range as a shooter is one of the biggest knocks on the All-Big 12 point guard. He actually shot 37.9 percent from three, which is respectable. But he didn’t take a ton of them. Phil Forte, Jeffrey Carroll and Leyton Hammonds all attempted more shots from deep than the Cowboys’ leading scorer.

Evans did get into the lane with easy, leading his team in free-throw attempts and ranking third in the Big 12, shooting 81.2 percent from the stripe.

Evans talked about his shot selection in college and how that may change at the next level.

“During the season, I felt like I could get into the lane and get fouled,” Evans explained. “When it was there, I’d take it. But now since [I’m] getting ready for the league, it’s bigger guys. I feel like I’m going to have to be able to shoot that three and pull up some more. Just to stay out of the lane more. Just get easier shots.”

Evans was predictably asked how the success of other smaller guards helps his projection moving forward.

“Chris Paul, Isaiah Thomas, the big roles they play for their teams,” Evans said. “I feel like I can come in, I can develop that and hopefully one day I’ll be as good as them.”

The NBA Draft is on June 22 at 6:00 p.m. CDT and will be televised on ESPN. Evans is projected as a late-first or early-second round talent.

Here’s a look at some of Evans’ pro day tape and the full interview.
