Leftover Notes from the Oklahoma State-West Virginia Game
I posted my 10 thoughts on Saturday afternoon, but I had a few leftover thoughts from a wild one in Morgantown. I’ll empty the notebook and we’ll move on to what should be a fantastic Bedlam week.
• Oklahoma State’s record under Gundy when fumbling three times in a game: 5-7.
• Of course Ramon turned the tide in the first quarter. Of course! By the way, how big was it for the OSU defense to keep the team in the game early. That could have gotten out of hand in a hurry and probably would have in other years.
• What was this emblem on Gundy’s shirt?
• Gundy and Holgorsen looked like they would rather be anywhere other than playing this football game in the first quarter. Like, literally anywhere.
• This clip destroyed me!

• The announcers had no idea that J.D. King is a better protector of the QB than Justice Hill, did they?
• I heart this GIF.

• So Gary Jennings has feathers in his helmet because he got hit by a bird in training camp and some feathers shook loose? That sounds … crazy.
• How do players never know when the end of the quarter is? I’ve always wondered that. High school, college, pros, doesn’t matter. They never know.
• The RPO to Washington over the middle is on my list of top five plays ever for an Oklahoma State offense. Just behind the fake inside handoff to the fullback followed by the pitch outside to Tatum Bell.
• This is amazing.

• Oklahoma State’s pass protection was pretty awesome on Saturday. It’s crazy how important Brad Lundblade is to the offense. Rudolph had one QB hurry and no sacks.
• The penalty on the kickoff by Jarrell Owens was … not great. Took a swipe at somebody. I can’t imagine the words that come out of Glenn Spencer’s mouth in the film room when he sees that.
• This dude.

• WVU came in with the No. 8 offense in the country in points per drive. I can’t repeat that enough.
• WVU has a backup Mountaineer! Also, I’m pretty sure I saw their regular Mountaineer (who was arrested this week) in the stands during the game.
• Rudolph got a glove. Can we get him two for Bedlam?
• Kyle Cox pointed this out in our Slack chat during the game, but OSU has become incredibly predictable on offense.
• Big 12 refs!

• I was frustrated in the first half that OSU didn’t go for the jugular. They had a four-drive stretch where they ran eight plays for 25 yards and punted twice, and they could have basically ended the game right there. Here was the play chart from the third of those four drives.
• At one point early J.D. King led 14-13 over WVU-Texas in the last two weeks, which is amazing.
• I think Gundy was pretty mad at Sinor for holding on to that punt that got blocked for too long. Sinor has looked pretty lousy all season. I’m curious to see if they stick with Hockett for Bedlam. Or if they attempt even one field goal.
• I’ll lean on Lunt and Fleming here in what they write next week, but it really seems like Spencer has done a terrific job mixing defensive coverages the last few weeks, starting with the Baylor game.
• Still not sure how Justice sneaked in.

• It went unnoticed, but Rudolph also became the all-time leader in completions in Oklahoma State history.
• King came into the game with 23 Big 12 carries — he had 25 in the first half. He had 36 in the game, which is the most any individual Gundy RB has ever had in a football game.
“If you try to challenge throwing the ball into a defense that’s set up for that, it’s going to be a long, long day.”
• Ramon livin’ that life.

• I’d forgotten that the halftime score in 2015 in Morgantown was 17-2. What a weird year that was.
• *Whispers James Washington has an outside chance to become the all-time leader in Big 12 receiving yards. He went just over 1,000 in this game to put him at just under 4,000 for his career. Ryan Broyles has the record at 4,586.
• Who did this?

• One thing that frustrates me: Rudolph is so smart that when you go for the throat, you don’t actually have to go for it. He’ll check down, and everything will be fine. Except they rarely go for it.
• I’m weak!

• Was an underrated great uni matchup. Couple of classics from OSU-WVU the last two years.
• That Stoner drop on third down could have been an all-time great butterfly effect play. It led to two straight non-offensive TDs for WVU and could have eventually ended OSU’s Big 12/CFP hopes.
• “Tell me how you get into Murphy’s so quickly. They always make me go to the back of the line!”
• OSU literally does none of the stuff Gundy preaches you have to do to beat good teams — penalties, turnovers, etc.
• WVU trailed by 20 twice.
• Dan Hammerschmidt injured himself against Texas trying to celebrate with a college student. That’s amazing.

• Todd Blackledge called Stoner, “Dillon Stonehands.”
• Apropos of nothing, this on tOSU-Penn State rocked.
• This is elite tweeting.
Oklahoma State is finally pulling away from Oklahoma State.
