Leftover Notes on Oklahoma State’s 41-34 Win at Tech

I posted my 10 Thoughts early on Saturday morning, but I have leftover notes. I have a lot of leftover notes. Here is everything I wrote down during Oklahoma State’s ninth-straight victory over the Red Raiders.

• I don’t have time to go back and count every first down play, but it sure seemed like Texas Tech got far fewer yards per play on their first down attempts than TCU did. That transforms what you can do defensively.

• One of the FOX notes in the pregame was that at least 80 points were scored in the last five matchups. Not sure if I’m more surprised at how many times in a row that happened or that it didn’t happen last night.

• Tre Flowers was both my defensive MVP and my Uni Heisman winner (sorry, Tyron!)

• I believe Rudolph’s last pick-six was … the 2015 Bedlam game at home.

• My favorite GIF from the game.

• I really like OSU hitting short kickoffs. That should be a staple for them going forward.

• Thought it was an elite uni matchup. Big fan of the stars on Tech’s helmets, and Oklahoma State’s combo was righteous. I love the gray pants, and the black helmet was a perfect complement.

• Is this the “we cannot stop them from getting in the red zone but maybe they’ll keep missing FGs” defensive look?

• The coverages got a little wonky last night. It was weird to see Justin Phillips and Kenneth Edison-McGruder lined up out wide on Tech receivers. Maybe this has been a reality in the past and I just haven’t noticed it. It got ugly a couple of times.

• Oklahoma State held Tech to 5/12 on third downs. I pointed this out on Twitter the other night, but since Glenn Spencer took over, OSU is actually better defensively on third downs than OU is. We love to point out the games like TCU where OSU give up a bunch, but games like last night even those numbers out. #KeepSpencer

• I saw some outlet on Twitter dubbed the OSU-Tech game an instant classic. Pro tip: Close games don’t equal great ones. Last night was a close game. It wasn’t a great one.

• Gus Johnson said this after the game, but if you close your eyes, Mason Rudolph sounds like Peyton Manning. Listen.

• Carson and I talked about this in our postgame show, but I didn’t mind Gundy being conservative on the penultimate drive. Johnny Wilson snapped the ball nearly over Rudolph’s head on third down, and at that point, you’re just trying to get points.

Carson had an issue with his conservativeness on fourth and 1 late in the third quarter. I agree with that. I think that when you combine this offense with how Ammendola has been from close range, you have to start becoming a four-down team in the red zone. The flip side, though is that their red zone offense low-key stinks right now. So I’m not sure what you do there. But to say that Gundy coached on Saturday like he does in Bedlam? That ain’t true!

• Oklahoma State’s linebackers and secondary hit hard. Tre Flowers was a monster, and being anywhere near KEM with a football in my hands is not a space I want to occupy.

• Gundy said he knew Tech was going to onside (which is hilarious). Also, can Tylan jump or nah?

• All of the pass interference calls stunk. All of them. All of the ones on OSU. All of the ones on Tech. It’s football. Guys are going to bump and tug on each other. Let it go. LET IT GO!

• Oklahoma State is now 9-1 in games in which it gains 350 yards passing and 200 yards rushing. The only loss was at Arizona in 2012.

• OSU ran 10 more plays than Tech, but that differential was greater for much of the game.

• Joel Klatt kept talking about tempo with Tech, but I’m not even sure they want to be fast. I mentioned this in the 10T, but I think they want to be 2009 Texas (with about 1/3 the talent).

• The onside + INT felt very 2016ish, didn’t it?

• Oklahoma State had three pass interference calls or holds in its own end zone on defense. For a coach and team that prides itself on discipline and detail, that has not been the case thus far this year.

• Adrian Baker got real minutes and made a massive play at the end of the first half. It got buried, but that was a big time hold.

• Yes, yes he is.

• I said this last night, but I had the “do I need to to an about face on Rudolph” column on ice. Then he did what Mason Rudolph does on those last two drives. I’ve watched this throw many, many times. The U.S. Treasury thinks this is a dime.

• FOX also had this stat: Tech is 4-1 in night games against top 15 teams since 2007. I know it was ugly, but it’s no small thing to go there and get that win in a night game they’re all hopped up on tortilla fumes for.

• Rudolph has really improved his throws over the middle. Those used to be hold-your-breath tosses, and now they’re mostly moneybag emojis.

• I think OSU might have gotten a little out of its world with the deep ball last week. Throw it if it’s there, but this week’s passing attack was much more reasonable (and executable).

• Rudolph broke Weeden’s 300-yard games record with his 17th. Weeden had 16 (Weeden also played two years and one game).

• I’m crying!

• Yurcich was creative on third down. He ran some Keenen Brown stuff, some Rudolph runs, some delayed handoffs to Hill. It was fun to see.

• I want more J.D. King. Hill got 55 carries in the first two conference games, and King got three? I don’t care if you have Jim Brown behind Rudolph, that’s an inexcusable ratio. Also, I thought this was a good idea.

• Lol.

• Watch how hard Hill fights to get open here.

• Not good!

• I love the FOX cameras that show all 22 players on the field at once. ESPN does it too, but I thought FOX did it better (and more often).
