STILLWATER — Gary Patterson exited stage left Sunday, meaning Iowa State’s Matt Campbell is the second-most tenured coach in the Big 12; the gap between first and second might as well be a bike ride from Lubbock to Morgantown.

The Cyclones hired Campbell ahead of the 2016 season, 11 years after Mike Gundy took over at Oklahoma State.

Not including interim coaches, current Big 12 schools apart from OSU have hired on average 3.7 head coaches since Mike Gundy took over in 2005. That average will jump up to 3.9 when TCU and Tech make official hires.

School Number of Coaches Since 2005 Coaches
Baylor 5 Guy Morriss, Art Briles, Jim Grobe, Matt Rhule, Dave Aranda
Iowa State 4 Dan McCarney, Gene Chizik, Paul Rhoades, Matt Campbell
Kansas 6 Mark Mangino, Turner Gil, Charlie Weis, David Beaty, Les Miles, Lance Leipold
Kansas State 3 Bill Snyder, Ron Prince, Chris Klieman
Oklahoma 2 Bob Stoops, Linocln Riley
TCU 1* Gary Patterson
Texas 4 Mack Brown, Charlie Strong, Tom Herman, Steve Sarkisian
Texas Tech 4* Mike Leach, Tommy Tuberville, Kliff Kingsbury, Matt Wells
West Virginia 4 Rich Rodriguez, Bill Stewart, Dana Holgorsen, Neal Brown

* Currently using interim coach

Mike Leach, Bob Stoops, Mack Brown, Bill Snyder, Mark Mangino, Charlie Strong, Art Briles, Dana Holgorsen, Kliff Kingsbury, Matt Rhule, Tom Herman, Charlie Weis … Gundy has been around for it all. And it’s not as if he is hanging on; he got an extension in his 17th season.

“It is kind of unusual,” Gundy said Monday of the coaching changes around him. “It’s no different than now recruiting when I’m recruiting kids of players I’ve coached. It’s unusual.”

With Patterson’s TCU departure, Gundy is now the third-most tenured coach in the country behind Kirk Ferentz, who Iowa hired in 1999, and Utah’s Kyle Whittingham, who was hired a few weeks before Gundy in 2005.

It’s to the point with two interim coaches in the league that entering this weekend, half of the Big 12’s coaches don’t have double-digit wins at their current school. Gundy has 144 wins at Oklahoma State.

Coach School No. of Wins at School
Mike Gundy Oklahoma State 144
Lincoln Riley Oklahoma 54
Matt Campbell Iowa State 40
Chris Klieman Kansas State 17
Neal Brown West Virginia 15
Dave Aranda Baylor 9
Steve Sarkisian Texas 4
Lance Leipold Kansas 1
Jerry Kill* TCU 0
Sonny Cumbie* Texas Tech 0

* Interim coach

Gundy has mentioned on a few occasions this year that it is unusual in his field of work that all three of his children will go through the same school system, with his youngest being a junior at Stillwater High this year.

It’s hard to say how long this era of Big 12 coaching will last. The core of Gundy, Lincoln Riley, Matt Campbell and Chris Klieman seems strong. But Campbell’s name pops up with a lot of major coaching searches, and Riley’s name comes up with NFL jobs, whether either of those are justified or not.

But at least one thing seems constant in the Big 12, and that’s Gundy standing on the south sideline at Boone Pickens Stadium.
