The cut mullet rumors in a way only Mike Gundy could explain them.

About a month ago, as Oklahoma State was still prepping for its season opener and we were all still debating whether it would be Spencer Sanders or Dru Brown to shed his redshirt by Week 2, the clip heard round the Twittersphere took place.

After a tweet, a pic and a perceived haircut, people both among Oklahoma State circles and nationwide lost their minds at the thought that Mike Gundy had been retired. Fortunately, reports of its trim were greatly exaggerated.

On Wednesday, Gundy joined the Jim Rome Show to talk about OSU’s big win over Boise State and his team’s Big 12 opener against Texas Tech. Inevitably, Rome questioned Gundy about those mullet rumors and how they came about and the 14th-year head coach gave an explanation that could only from him.

“One day in fall camp in August, I had run a little bit too far and got a headache,” Gundy said. “I laid down to sleep for 30 minutes before I went to practice and it kinda smashed my hair. You know, like bed hair in college. You know, from sleeping all the time when you’ve been out all night.

(I have a feeling Gundy didn’t just hear about this from his friends back when he was QB1.)

“So I had that and it smashed it down and I think it kinda messed it up and somebody took a picture and hit it big. I don’t know where it came from.”

Gundy did reassure Rome that the mullet wasn’t going anywhere. “It’s been kinda fun and it rolls pretty good,” Gundy said.

“The team, they’re into it pretty good now. I mean they stay on it and they’ll come and check before anyone else will.”

“We have a lot of fun. We have a lot of fun around here. We put it out there. We’re kind of gunslingers on game day and we roll with it. Whatever happens happens.”
