After claiming his 117th career win at the expense of the No. 17 Boise State Broncos, Mike Gundy was honored by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl as its Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week.

The Cowboys, now No. 15 in both the AP and Coaches polls, are set to begin Big 12 play on Saturday against Texas Tech for a chance at the fifth 4-0 start in during Gundy’s 14-year tenure. A win against the Red Raiders would earn Gundy his 70th Big 12 win.

Consideration for the season’s end award could be apt if the Pokes keep winning. If Gundy can somehow captain this retooling ship to its fourth-straight 10-win season (and its fifth in six years) — or even get close — he would be worthy of any coaching honor thrown his way. Gundy was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2010, and in 2011 he earned national honors as the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year, as well as the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year.

The Dodd Trophy is given annually to “the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.” A list of finalists will be release at the end of the season and the winner will be named the week of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia.
