Mike Yurcich’s $200K Raise Makes Him One of Highest-Paid OCs in the Big 12

On Monday, Mark Cooper of the Tulsa World reported that in addition to Mike Gundy’s $675,000 pay raise for 2018, the school also handed out raises to all eight of his returning assistants from last season.

Leading the way is offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich, who enters his sixth season at the helm of a Cowboy offense that ranked first nationally in passing offense, second in total offense and fourth in scoring offense last year. For his trouble, Yurcich gets a $200,000 bump which will see him earn $800,000 in 2018.

According to USA Today‘s numbers, Yurcich was the 72nd-highest paid assistant coach in college football in 2017. This bump would move him up to a tie for a spot in the top 30 with the likes of Clemson co-offensive coordinators Jeff Scott and Tony Elliott, Texas OC Tim Beck and Auburn OC Chip Lindsey (based on their 2017 salaries — many of those may also receive bumps before the season).

Beck, at $800,000 was the highest-paid OC in the Big 12 last season, so as it currently sits, pending other raises this summer and beyond, Yurcich would now share the lead for top-earning OC in the league.

Here’s a look at the salaries for Gundy’s 10 assistants for 2018.

Coach Position 2018 Salary Increase
Mike Yurcich OC $800,000 $200,00
Jim Knowles DC $600,000  —
Joe Bob Clements DL $420,000 $20,000
Josh Henson OL $420,000 $20,000
Kasey Dunn WR $410,000 $50,000
Tim Duffie CB $375,000 $18,686
Dan Hammerschmidt S $350,000 $25,000
Jason McEndoo CW/TE $300,000 $25,000
John Wozniak RB $275,000 $25,000
Greg Richmond DL $200,000  —

First-year defensive coordinator Jim Knowles will make $75,000 less than his predecessor Glenn Spencer made in 2017.

This makes a combined salary for all 10 assistants of $4.15 million, up from $3.6 million for nine assistants in 2017. The combined salary of OSU’s 10 assistants is still less than the head man makes after his raise in 2018 to $5 million a year.
