NFL Draft Expert Mel Kiper Jr. Projects Rudolph, Washington as Second-Rounders
NFL Draft junkies and internet scouts have varied on their draft projections of QB Mason Rudolph. Some see him as a potential fourth-rounder, while others have pegged him as a potential top overall pick. It’s all across the board.
Long-time NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. weighed in on the perpetual debate on Thursday, saying he believes both Rudolph, as well as Biletnikoff Award favorite James Washington, are likely headed for the second round. But the pre-draft process — NFL combine, closed-door interviews, etc., could boost their standings among teams.
Probably second round for Rudolph and Washington. They could rise during the pre-draft process. https://t.co/NRsD8x2cd1

With at least six games remaining on the schedule this season, the dynamic offensive duo could also improve their standings in the draft world with strong play. If Rudolph torches Oklahoma in Bedlam and leads his team to a Big 12 title and CFP berth, pundits might throw their hat in the ring of Rudolph as momentum can be a factor when it relates to draft standing (see: Sam Darnold, 2016).
Wherever Rudolph and Washington land in the NFL Draft, the two appear to be fully etched into the Oklahoma State record books. Rudolph has already topped Brandon Weeden for first all-time in yards passing in his OSU career, and is one TD shy of tying Weeden on TDs thrown, too.
| QB | Pass Yards | Pass TDs |
|---|---|---|
| Mason Rudolph | 11,364 | 74 |
| Brandon Weeden | 9,260 | 75 |
| Mike Gundy | 8,473 | 57 |
| Zac Robinson | 8,317 | 66 |
| Josh Fields | 6,090 | 55 |
Washington need only average 97 yards per game to finish first all-time in yards receiving in OSU history. He has a long ways to go to top Rashaun Woods on the list, but there’s a reasonable chance he could be atop all OSU’s receiving categories before he begins his professional career.
Whether the two are first-rounders or fourth-rounders, though, NFL teams are likely chomping at the bit to see how the record-setting Cowboys can mesh into NFL systems. There will be plenty of debate about OSU’s air-raid style offense and how those skills can fit into the professional ranks, but when it comes down to it, the two have produced unlike many players at their respective positions across the country. That has to count for something.
