NFL Roundup: More History for Dez, Kevin Peterson Getting His Shot and Chris Carson Suffers Setback

Week 14 of the NFL schedule is in the books and the playoff picture is taking shape. Let’s take a look at how some former Oklahoma State players and their teams fared.

Dez Bryant

Dez and the Cowboys beat up on division rival, the now 2-10 New York Giants 30-10 on Sunday. Bryant hauled in three of his five targets for 73 yards, including this 50-yard score.

On top of being the franchise leader in career TD receptions, Bryant is also now just the fourth player in Dallas Cowboy history with at least ten 50-plus yard receptions.

Chris Carson

Carson — the darling of the Seattle Seahawks fanbase and one Pete Carroll — unfortunately, suffered a setback in his attempt at an early comeback from his Week 4 injury, his head coach stated on Friday.

Here’s the full quote.

“(Carson) a little bit of an ankle turn. Just caught it a little bit,” said Carroll. “So just got to make sure we know what that means as he bounces back from it. We were looking to try to find a time when we could put him back on the practice field next week or the week after that.

We were looking with real optimism. But I don’t know if that’s going to happen after the little setback. We’ll have to see when we get though the weekend. We won’t know until like Wednesday or something of next week where that fits.News Tribune

There are three games remaining so this setback puts Carson’s 2017 comeback in doubt, depending on Seattle’s postseason standing. The Seahawks are one game behind the NFC West-leading Rams and one spot out of the playoff picture currently, but play host to L.A. on Sunday in a game with big playoff implications.

Russell Okung

Okung and Co. continued their hot streak with the Chargers’ fourth-straight win, this time at the hands of Washington and to the tune of 30-13.

The former OSU All-American went down with a knee injury and limped off the field but was cleared after an evaluation by the medical staff and returned to the game.

Los Angeles has made one of the more dramatic turnarounds in the NFL this season. After starting 0-4, the Chargers are now 7-6 and sit atop the AFC West division.

One of the biggest differences in the Chargers’ success can be attributed to Philip Rivers’ decreased sack rate. The previous three seasons, he’s ranked 17th, 19th and 16th in the league. This year, he boasts the lowest sack rate in the NFL. The difference? He’s now got Okung, who signed with the other L.A. this offseason, protecting his blindside.

Kevin Peterson

Three weeks ago, Peterson was promoted to the Rams’ active roster after a concussion of starting CB Kayvon Webster and another injury left Los Angeles short-handed in the secondary. After this week, the NFC West’s top team is in dire straits. Webster suffered a season-ending torn Achilles and was placed on injured reserve Monday.

After Webster’s injury, and another that saw Trumaine Johnson leave the game, Peterson saw the most snaps of his young career. The former All-Big 12 corner was on the field for 21 plays on defense and 18 on special teams, recording a tackle.

Rams head coach Sean McVay talked about the depth at the corner position and how some backups — now three of the four active cornerbacks on his roster — looked against the Eagles.

“You look at Troy Hill came in and did a nice job,” said McVay. “Nickell (Robey-Coleman) continues to show up even though he’s played a lot of football for us and then I think Kevin Peterson did a nice job as well making a handful of plays when he was kind of at the point of attack.”

With three weeks left, the Wagoner native faces a continued increased role and may even get the start on Sunday as the Rams head to Seattle for a crucial divisional game against the Seahawks.

Lane Taylor

The Packers held on in overtime to keep the Cleveland Browns winless and to move one game over .500 at 7-6. The Browns defense sans an injured Emmanuel Ogbah only registered one sack against Lane Taylor’s offensive line that had given up 12 sacks over the previous three games.

It appears the running game success from last week was an aberration as the Packers struggled to gain 85 yards on just over 3 yards per carry, although the line did clear space for a nice run here.

Dan Bailey

Bailey came into Sunday perfect on the year (8 for 8) on field goals. In fact, the most accurate kicker in NFL history had not missed a field goal attempt since December 18 of last year! But all good things, as they say, must come to an end.

Bailey was good for 21 yards on the opening drive but misses from 53 and 50 yards left the Mustang native with one simple summation. “It was just a frustrating day,” Bailey told reporters.

Vincent Taylor

Taylor saw just one snap on defense and seven on special teams during the Dolphins’ Monday night win over division rival New England. He did not record any stats.

Lenzy Pipkens

The rookie corner logged nine snaps on special teams but didn’t record a stat in Green Bay’s 27-21 overtime win over Cleveland.

Tyler Patmon

The former Cowboy DB recorded a tackle and saw reps on both defense and special teams during Jacksonville’s 30-24 win over Seattle.
