NFL Update: The Top Five OSU Storylines from Week 7

Rudy’s return to MNF and Marcell goes deep.

It was a somewhat slow week as far as orange-flavored NFL news goes with bye weeks and injuries keeping a handful of Cowboys out of action. But there are still plenty of tidbits and pertinent news concerning Pokes in the pros.

Here are the top five NFL storylines relating to Oklahoma State.

Mason Rudolph Cleared for Return

No. 2 spent his bye week in Stillwater, along with former teammates like Emmanuel Ogbah, and even played dunk competition judge at Homecoming and Hoops.

But days before that, Rudolph cleared concussion protocol following his nasty head-to-head collision with Baltimore safety Earl Thomas three weeks ago. Earlier this week, Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin affirmed that Rudolph would be the starter once he was able saying, “That guy is our quarterback.”

Rudolph is set to return Oct. 28 on Monday Night Football (he’s 1-0 on MNF) against an accommodating (and 31st-ranked) Miami Dolphins defense. Look for Rudy to light it up on the big stage.

Blake Jarwin Scores in Cowboys’ Big Win

One Target. One Catch. 1 Yard. One Touchdown.

That was the Sunday stat line for the former (and current) Cowboys tight end.

That might have been the easiest score of Blake Jarwin’s football career. It pushed America’s team (but not mine!) to a 21-7 lead against division rival Philadelphia. Dallas would win 37-10.

A year after working his way into a featured role in 2018, the return of future HOFer Jason Witten has pushed Jarwin down the TE totem pole, but through seven games, Jarwin is still second among the position group in targets (15) and receptions (11) and he’s tied with Witten for two TDs. His 35 receiving yards leads all Dallas tight ends.

Witten won’t be around forever. If Jarwin keeps making plays like this, he’s in a good spot to take up that mantle in Big D.

James Washington Returns to Practice

In the same game that Rudolph went down, his fellow Cowboy-turned-Steeler James Washington was sidelined with a shoulder injury. Washington returned to practice on Monday and Mike Tomlin seems somewhat optimistic that he could be available for the Monday Night game against Miami on Oct. 28.

Tomlin mentioned Washington among three Steelers who have progressed this week to Steelers.com.

“We’re excited about getting some of these guys back – at least moving in the right direction in terms of partial participation and we’ll get an opportunity to look at that participation and see if they can carry some roles for us this week.”

Chris Carson — Still Truck-Sticking

Carson broke a streak of three-straight 100-yard rushing games with his 65-yard outing in the 30-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens and former backfield mate Justice Hill.

Despite the fact that his Seahawks suffered just their second loss of the season, Carson was productive and made a memorable play against a familiar defender.

Carson got a little inadvertent payback for a former teammate (Mason Rudolph) against another former teammate (Earl Thomas).

Despite the slightly down weekend, Carson is still ranked seventh in the NFL in rushing yards (569 through seven games). He finished fifth last year with 1,151.

Marcell Ateman Goes Deep

It’s been a rough go for Marcell Ateman during his young pro career. After being projected into the first round of the NFL Draft by one draft analyst, Ateman fell all the way to the seventh. Things didn’t go much smoother after that.

He spent the first half of his rookie season on the Raiders’ practice squad before injuries saw Ateman promoted to the active roster. Despite showing some promise when called upon down the stretch, Ateman was relegated once again to the scout team to start 2019.

But in Year 2, he’s back and has taken on the No. 88 jersey (which I love for a tall, rangy receiver) and in his second game since promotion has already shown his deep-ball skills.
