Notebook: 500 Penalty Yards, Streaks Stop and Thompson’s Rushing Day

There was a lone bright spot in OSU’s loss on Saturday.

Oklahoma State’s 31-12 loss to Kansas State on Saturday was about as ugly as it gets.

Here is a notebook with points that will likely help fuel your angry tweeting/commenting.

Cowboys Surpass 500 Penalty Yards

The Cowboys finally got a second-half stop after bringing down Skylar Thompson on third-and-7 with less than eight minutes to go at OSU’s 37. That quickly got nullified as a facemask penalty gave the Wildcats a first down, and K-State finished the drive with Alex Barnes’ fourth rushing touchdown and a 31-12 lead.

The penalty was one of the seven the Cowboys had Saturday. With OSU’s 70 penalty yards against K-State, the Cowboys have given up 514 yards in penalties through their opening seven games. In all of last season, OSU gave up 592.

“I really don’t think that the penalties were undisciplined, more so that, like I said, we just got pushed around quite a bit of times,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said.

More Streaks Fall

The Cowboys’ Jenga tower of streaks finally came tumbling down.

A few weeks ago, the nine-game winning streak against Texas Tech ended. Then there was the Cowboys’ six-game streak against Iowa State ending.

On Saturday, the Cowboys seven-game road streak ended. Justice Hill’s Big 12 record 12 straight games with a rushing touchdown ended. OSU’s 19-game winning streak when leading at halftime ended. The Cowboys’ 33-game streak of creating a turnover also ended.

Wallace Provides Minor Bright Spot

Saturday’s game against K-State will be another that OSU fans would rather forget this season, but Tylan Wallace continues to be a bright spot.

Wallace had five receptions for 90 yards, including what might have been his best catch to date in the second quarter.

Wallace is up to 40 catches for 718 yards and four touchdowns in his sophomore season. OSU’s next-leading receiver is Tyron Johnson, who has 20 catches for 399 yards and three scores.

Thompson Latest in QBs Having Successful Rushing Outings Against OSU

K-State quarterback Skylar Thompson had nearly doubled the amount of rushing yards Justice Hill had Saturday.

Despite being sacked twice, Thompson finished with 80 rushing yards. That’s a nice amount of rushing yards for a quarterback, but it’s only the third most the Cowboys have allowed a QB to run on them this season.

Missouri State’s Peyton Huslig had 109 rushing yards despite being sacked five times. Iowa State’s Brock Purdy had 84 rushing yards last week even after three sacks took away from his total.
