Oklahoma State was picked to finish fifth in the Big 12 Conference this year by the media, which is exactly where the smart people whose livelihoods actually depend on getting this stuff correct are slotting them as well.

According to the most recent odds from Westgate Superbook, Oklahoma State is 16-1 to win the conference this year, tied with TCU and just behind Iowa State for third. Here’s a look.

Team Odds
OU 5/7
Texas 3-1
Iowa St. 10-1
Oklahoma St. 16-1
TCU 16-1
Baylor 25-1
Texas Tech 30-1
West Virginia 50-1
Kansas St. 100-1
Kansas 300-1

A few thoughts on these odds …

• Was there a 0 missed on Kansas’ number?

• Texas at 3-1 feels like a bargain compared to OU at 5/7. OU at 5/7? I mean, I get it, but that seems outrageously low for any team who lost a Heisman winner and the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft. [OU goes 13-0 to start the season, Kyle ceases writing words online]

• OSU at 16-1 feels about right. If you would have asked me to blindly pick a number, I probably would have picked 25-1 or something like that, but I also would have put OU at like 2-1 and Texas at like 4-1 or 5-1.

• Iowa State at 10-1 is way too low. Would have pegged them at more like 12-1 or 15-1. Look, they might be great, but the reality is that Matt Campbell has 10 wins in three years against Power 5 teams not named Kansas. Don’t @ me, but the Campbell hype may have swung too far in his direction.

• West Virginia at 50-1 is pretty interesting. Are they really going to be that weak?

• Baylor feels problematic this year. I think Matt Rhule is pretty good — despite the fact that he flirts more with the NFL than Mike Gundy does with the SEC — and Charlie Brewer’s arm makes me weak. I’m glad Oklahoma State has them at home this year.

• Two other notes here, OSU is 200-1 to win it all, according to Westgate Superbook and has dropped from 40-1 to 50-1 to make the CFP at all over the last few weeks.
