Oklahoma State Players and Coaches Excited for Spring Game, Tease Possible Format
Players and coaches say what they’re most excited about for the spring game.
STILLWATER — On Saturday fans will watch coach Eric Morris take the field inside Boone Pickens Stadium for the first time.
Just days away from the first spring game to take place under anyone other than former coach Mike Gundy for decades, the program released a video on social media Monday night where coaches and players were asked what they were most excited for ahead of Saturday’s game at 4 p.m.
Punter Lachie Pozzobon didn’t waste his opportunity with the mic.
“I want to say everyone shirts off just swinging that around,” he said, miming the swinging motion. “I also want it loud bro, as loud as it can get.”
Morris went for the obvious with his answer.
“First time to don the sidelines at Boone Pickens Stadium,” the coach said, smiling.
Although an official format has yet to be announced, some of the offensive players seemed to tip things a bit on camera.
“I’m excited to win, you know offense is definitely going to beat the defense next week,” starting quarterback Drew Mestemaker said.
This lines up with earlier comments from Morris, made on April 1st when he said the format was still up in the air.
“I’d like to be able to split up into two teams,” Morris said. “I just don’t know where the depth lies, if we’re going to have the ability … It’s looking like we’ll have the ability to have the offense versus the defense and put them in a bunch of situations and see how they respond.”
Who takes the field and when should be pretty telling as Morris has previously said the team feels pretty good about who most of the starters are heading into the summer.
“Developing the twos in depth right now is something that keeps me up at night a little bit right now,” Morris said on April 1.
Saturday should give guys one last shot at cracking or moving up in the two-deep ahead of fall camp as special teams coordinator and tight ends coach Drew Svoboda made apparent in Monday’s video.
“One final opportunity for the guys to show how far they’ve come from start to finish,” Svoboda said.
For the most part, the video served as a primer for new names to know. If you only learned those guys you could at least figure out when the first string units were on the field.
But a few returning Cowboys still got some airtime.
“I’m just excited to see all our fans again man,” defensive end Jaleel Johnson said. “It’s been a long time since we had BPS jumping, I’m ready to see it jumping.”
The best part of the video was easily Morris’ second spot when he went right back at his interviewer, safety Harrison Dempsey.
“Ready to hopefully score some touchdowns against you,” Morris said. “When I see (you), we’re calling plays, we’re going straight at you.”
Dempsey didn’t hesitate to go right back at the head coach.
“Please, please call it toward me,” he said.
You can watch the full video below. It’s something fans should make time for because wide receiver Jabarie Thornton channels some kind of mix between Batman and one of his villains when he addresses fans and even this description won’t quite do it justice.
“Looking for energy!” Thornton said. “Ecstatic energy! We get rowdy and get loud!”
