OSU baseball’s path to a Super Regional appearance isn’t shot just yet, but its chances of getting there just got a whole lot harder. The Cowboys late on Friday fell 6-4 to Oral Roberts in the Stillwater Regional opener, falling to the Golden Eagles in a stunner after their late bid for a comeback fell flat.

OSU fell behind 2-0 after giving up a pair in the third. Mother Nature spread her wings and forced a weather delay, but OSU made a mess of things shortly after, giving up another three runs in the fifth to fall behind 5-0.

David Mendham batted two in in the fifth to get things closer. It would get uglier before it got prettier, though, as ORU plated one more in the sixth to go up 6-2.

That prompted OSU with its backs to the walls to start swinging for the fences — and literally — with Aidan Meola and Zach Erhard both going yard in the eighth inning off solo bombs. It never got closer from there, however, and with a runner on second in the bottom of the ninth, Tyler Wulfert went down looking.

OSU now moves to the elimination side of the bracket where it will play again Saturday at 2 p.m. vs. Dallas Baptist, while ORU, the lowest seeded team in the region, moves on to face Washington, the second-lowest seeded team in the region after defeating DBU.

OSU will need to win out in two elimination bracket games and then sweep the finals 2-0 to secure the Stillwater Regional and earn a Super Regional berth, which it has done thrice under coach Josh Holliday.
