OSU Softball: Cowgirls Finish Florida Road Trip on Seven-Game Winning Streak
The Cowgirls are coming in hot to Stillwater.
Oklahoma State tallied two more wins Saturday over Pittsburgh and Loyola Chicago to conclude its Florida road trip. The Cowgirls have been in the Sunshine State for over a week, amassing an 8-2 record during their visit and finishing on a seven-game winning streak.
OSU’s visit started with a three-game stand in the Shriners Children’s Clearwater Invitational, where the Cowgirls went 1-2 with losses to Georgia and LSU and a win over Wisconsin last weekend. That’s where things quit going wrong for OSU, though.
The Cowgirls started their seven-game winning streak with a 3-0 win over No. 16 Florida on Monday. Two days later, OSU mounted a comeback thanks to five home runs to avoid an upset to Stetson. The South Florida Showdown started Thursday with OSU getting a pair of wins over No. 4 Washington and South Florida. The Cowgirls run-ruled Yale 10-1 on Friday before capping the trip Saturday with wins over Pittsburgh and Loyola Chicago.
OSU got back-to-back complete game shutouts out of Ivy Rosenberry and Lexi Kilfoyl on Saturday. Rosenberry improved to 3-0 after winning a 1-0 pitchers duel against Pitt. Claire Timm was walked home with bases loaded in the sixth inning for the only run of the game.
OSU’s bats woke up in its next game, but not until late, handling Loyola Chicago 6-0 behind Kilfoyl’s dominance in the circle. The Cowgirls didn’t score until the fourth inning when Caroline Wang drove in Timm from third with a groundout. Rosie Davis then had an RBI single to give OSU a pair of runs in the inning.
Lexi McDonald separated the score even more with a three-run shot in the fifth inning to make the score 5-0. Kilfoyl came in as pinch hitter in the sixth to drive in the last run of the game with an RBI single.
The Cowgirls will return to Stillwater at 13-2 and riding a seven-game winning streak. That streak includes a pair of ranked wins over No. 16 Florida and No. 4 Washington, whom Kilfoyl tossed shutouts against both. OSU has outscored opponents 44-8 during the streak, and six of those runs all came in one game against Stetson.
After trips to both coasts to start the season, the Cowgirls’ home opener will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday when they host South Dakota State for a doubleheader.
