Star OSU defensive end Trace Ford sustained a torn ACL in practice this week, his mother told The Oklahoman’s Jacob Unruh. He’s expected to miss the entire 2021 season.

Ford tore the ACL in his other knee last season and was gearing up for a breakout season. Just two months ago, Gundy highlighted Ford by saying he was “doing great” coming off the injury. They held him out of spring ball but he was competing in the offseason training and ramping up just in time for the start of the year. However, on Saturday night the Cowboy Radio Network reported that he underwent a “minor medical procedure” recently, prompting questions about his status after the game.

“Trace Ford won’t be back for awhile,” said Gundy postgame.

Losing Ford is a devastating blow to OSU’s talent on defense. He has shown flashes of superstardom as a pass-rusher at OSU and was slated to slot in as a starter this season after recording 4.5 sacks in 10 games in 2020.

Redshirt seniors Brock Martin and Tyren Irby should help fill the void left by Ford but it will nonetheless be difficult to replace what he brings to the team as an edge rusher. Freshman Collin Oliver could also get an expanded opportunity after flashing on tape against Missouri State on Saturday night.
