OSU’s Nonconference Game Against Western Illinois Still On as Scheduled
The MVC announced Monday it is proceeding as planned.
It remains unclear what alterations — if any — the Big 12 Conference will make to facilitate the 2020 football season. But for now, one of Oklahoma State’s nonconference opponents is plodding ahead as planned.
The Missouri Valley Conference announced Monday that it will delay fall competition for MVC sports until Sept. 18, but its decision “does not include football-playing institutions.” Its decision affirms that, barring a Big 12 decision to wipe away nonconference games, as the Big Ten and Pac-12 have done, OSU’s game against Western Illinois, an MVC football member, will still be held as scheduled on Saturday, Sept. 19.
OSU’s season doesn’t exactly tilt on how it fares against a team that has the Leathernecks as its mascot, but with dwindling nonconference options, it’s a minor victory. OSU is already trying to find another nonconference opponent to replace Oregon State for Week 1, and finding a second nonconference opponent for Week 3 on a tight timeline would have presented a challenge.
Then again, it probably wouldn’t have mattered all that much. Western Illinois is coming off a one-win season and looks, by far, like OSU’s easiest challenger on the 2020 schedule. Simply not having the game on OSU’s resume probably wouldn’t make much difference than having it on the resume as a rout.
Unless OSU is able to reschedule a nonconference opponent for Week 1, here’s an updated look at its schedule for the upcoming season.
