PFB Comments of the Week (November 24)

Published

on

Oklahoma State lost to Kansas State in football. I bet that’s a sentence you didn’t think you’d be reading a couple months ago. An uninspired performance from the Pokes led to a 45-40 home loss. If the Cowboys had played the second half with the same intensity as Gyasi Akem seemingly does everything, they might have won.

Senior day against Kansas this Saturday and a bowl game are the final two remaining games in the Rudolph era. We have two more opportunities to watch #Rudolph2Washington play in the orange and black. As we wind down what might be the most disappointing 10-win season Stillwater will ever see, let’s take a look at the comments of the week.

1. The Rudolph Era

Gundy has done an outstanding job at everything but beating OU, recruiting and beating quality opponents. I am not saying he should be terminated. But the fans, and Gundy need to be honest that the coaching has to get better or else OSU is stuck. I know it’s a broken record but it is the truth. Bob Stoops is the right pattern for Gundy to follow. When Stoops had the right assistants the program excelled. When he didn’t the program stumbled. Gundy needs to quit worrying about continuity and start hiring the best possible coaches. –stepdaddy on assistant coaches.

Think about the Rudolph era for a minute. The winningest quarterback in our schools history, but how many of those wins are good wins? Destroying Colorado in the Alamo Bowl was a good win. So was the home win over TCU in 2015. Those are the only two that come to mind for me. A lot of you will probably want to mention the 2014 Bedlam game, but OSU really didn’t have anything to lose that year. I love beating OU, but it didn’t mean as much as a Bedlam win this year would have.

2. Bowl Matchups

I would like a matchup in the Camping World vs. NC State/Virginia Tech. Nice change of scenery by going to Florida to face a quality ACC team. We haven’t played in a Florida bowl game or played an ACC opponent since the 80s. –Steve Hutchens on OSU bowl game possibilities.

OSU could also try and persuade Virginia Tech’s defensive coordinator Bud Foster to come to Stillwater. Unfortunately, the odds that Foster leaves Blacksburg are slim to none. The Pokes might actually struggle in this game. Mason Rudolph would struggle against the Hokies secondary. Brandon Facyson and Tech secondary would cause a lot of problems for QB1.

3. Poor Hoops Offense

I think our defense is better than last year but we struggled this week getting easy baskets. Not enough movement. Wrong players taking shots at wrong time. And too much dribbling by our PGs. Eliminate certain players taking 3s and work on ball movement and we will be ok. –Hackleman Poke on the OSU offense.

Switching to basketball here, the Pokes offense has looked weak early on this season. It doesn’t help when OSU has been missing half the team due to suspension, but now that Carroll is back, the offense should be better than it is.

4. Weeden v. Rudolph

Agree with most of this, but would have to put Rudolph slightly behind Weeden. I could be talked into having them both tied for the top though. Weeden had a much better offensive line than Rudolph has had to work with (significantly better). He also had a better D that was good at creating turnovers. It makes it easier when all of the pressure is not on you. Weeden also had a better OC that did an amazing job of developing him as a QB. That being said, Weeden’s success in big games overshadows Rudolph’s and that is why I give him the slight edge. –R26 on Brandon Weeden being better than Mason Rudolph.

I can agree with this take. Rudolph hasn’t been able to finish in big games. Maybe the Spencer Sanders era will turn that around.

5. You Play The Game For A Reason

I think everyone in the Big 12 should just automatically start 1-0. Unless you’ve lost to Kansas in the last 5 years. So like Texas would still have to play them each year. Oh, ISU and WVU too. –GeoPoke on having to play Kansas.

If you had said this last year we wouldn’t have the internet sensation that was #TexasLostToKansasInFootball. Plus, without schools like Kansas, players like James Washington and Mason Rudolph don’t get to run up their stats. Records don’t get broken without schools like Kansas.

6. Rudolph’s Reads

I think Mason has gotten into his own head. The more I see stuff broken down on this site (thanks btw), the more I believe that Yurcich is actually good at the X’s and O’s and that Mason has mismanaged those in-game. You can’t triple stamp a double stamp! –GeoPoke on Mason Rudolph’s reads.

The TCU game might have broken Rudolph. He’s struggled to make reads all season, and it has led to more interceptions and bad decisions than we’re used to seeing from him. Yurcich hasn’t been awful this year, though I wish he were better at making adjustments, Mason deserves blame too. Of course, with a better defense, they both probably would have looked better this season.

7. Rudolph’s Legacy

I think you are mostly right, though maybe take it a bit farther than most would.
I think Rudolph will be remembered by fans 15-20 years from now as “almost the runaway greatest QB in school history who couldn’t quite close out when it really counted.” That’s not to say he isn’t great, or that he will be easily replaceable. He’s got a dang good arm and some poise and holds all those records for a reason. Yet he’ll be the one that always makes us wonder what if. The Harden Trade of OSU QBs if you will……. –Gallagher? I hardly know her! on Mason Rudolph’s legacy.

Had he won Bedlam this year, that certainly would have changed his legacy. When all is said and done, Rudolph will be remembered as a borderline great quarterback who couldn’t quite finish the end of some big games.

8. BPS Upgrades

Can we please address our biggest issue…where does our Jumbotron need to go? –MajorPayneCounty on a potential Jumbotron in BPS.

I’ve been asking myself the same question since Gundy announced that prominent alumni were ready to donate as much as they need to. Surely BPS will be getting jumbotron treatment soon…but where? Also, it’d be cool if BPS got LED Ribbons around the suites, if its possible.

9. Boynton’s Version of Cowboy Culture

Awesome to see Coach Boynton setting the culture of this program early. I’m sure he knows deep down that the players on OSU roster aren’t on the same caliber with the big boys, but instilling hard work and a belief that they can at least compete will go a long way. I can see why they compete hard for him. He expects as much from himself as he does from them. –oSu Jones on basketball culture.

It’s great to see Boynton already instilling these values in the program. It may not help a whole lot this season, but these values could go a long way in the future. On another note, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving Day filled with family, food and football.
