PFB Live: Keep up with the Action as OSU Welcomes Boise State
Follow along and join the conversation as OSU takes on No. 17 Boise State.
Final Thoughts
Oklahoma State balled out on defense. Brett Rypien was constantly pressured, hurried or hit. Jordan Brailford was awesome. Calvin Bundage was awesome despite his penchant for the neutral zone. I’m officially a Jim Knowles supporter.
OSU’s special teams unit had one hell of a comeback performance with two blocked punts and a score of its own.
OSU was good enough on offense. While I think we learned a ton about OSU’s defense, I don’t know how much we learned about OSU’s offense and Taylor Cornelius — other than that he’s tough as hell. The balls weren’t always on target and there were still some questionable throws, but he stood up to a highly-touted defense and put 37 points on the board. Another W and a hefty deposit has been made on Cornelius’ behalf in Gundy’s Bank of Trust.
End of Game |Â OSU 44 — Boise State 21
4Q: 0:43: OSU 44 — Boise State 21: Devin Harper chases down Brett Rypien on the roll out and knocks the ball loose. The Cowboys recover the fumble and take knee.
4Q: 2:43: OSU 44 — Boise State 21:Â A Jarrell Owens forced fumble is nullified by a Boise holding penalty.
4Q: 4:16: OSU 44 — Boise State 21: Cornelius takes more punishment, this time from his OL, but it pays off as he gets shoved into the end zone by Teven Jenkins. Cowboys insert the dagger, up 23 with four minutes left.
4Q: 6:53: OSU 37 — Boise State 21:Â Cowboys are able to chew up some more clock. On third-and-1, Jelani Woods motions right as a decoy and Cornelius takes the keeper left for first down and some further punishment.
4Q: 6:39: OSU 44 — Boise State 21:Â Justice Hill decides to take things into his own hands and hits the sideline for 72 yards and a score.
UPDATE: Upon further review, Hill stepped on the sideline at the 19-yard line. Let’s call it 53 yards.
4Q: 6:53: OSU 37 — Boise State 21: Calvin Bundage and Devin Harper team up for a sack on third down. The Broncos and the Cowboys trade three-and-outs midway through the fourth.
Dillon Stoner fair catch at OSU 28. The Cowboys need to try to get something going on the ground or short passing game to burn up some clock.
4Q: 8:12: OSU 37 — Boise State 21: Cornelius sacked for loss of 10 on third down, Cowboys punt it away up three scores.
4Q: 9:08: OSU 37 — Boise State 21: Cornelius airs it out and was nearly picked off on the under-throw.
4Q: 9:50: OSU 37 — Boise State 21:Â Boise State picks up plenty of dirty laundry with a delay of game followed by a holding penalty to effectively start the drive first-and-25.
The Broncos pick up 6 on third-and-16 and punt it to OSU’s 26.
4Q: 11:07: OSU 37 — Boise State 21:Â Pokes settle for 3. Ammendola hits the chip shot. Hopefully OSU can keep from trading TDs for FGs with a bunch of time left.
4Q: 12:00: OSU 34 — Boise State 21:Â Justice Hill puts the Cowboys on the goal line but the Pokes still have trouble scoring in the red zone. A wildcat to Justice is unsuccessful. Ammendola in to salvage the possession.
Another trick play was unsuccessful. Maybe OSU should leave the Boise State-ing to Boise State.
Did #okstate just run the Philly Special?

End of 3rd Quarter | OSU 34 — Boise State 21
3Q: 0:56: OSU 34 — Boise State 21:Â Justice Hill reminds everyone who RB1 is with tough runs of 12 and 14 yards to push OSU’s offense into enemy territory as the third quarter’s clock runs out.
Does this begin the Justice Hill takeover? OSU up 34-21 with 1:30 left in the 3rd.
— Michael Doutey (@mike_doutey) September 15, 2018
3Q: 1:30: OSU 34 — Boise State 21:Â On fourth-and-goal from the 5, Rypien absorbs contact and steps into a TD pass to Chase Blakely.
3Q: 2:11: OSU 34 — Boise State 14:Â Brett Rypien hits Sean Modster on back-to-back 23-yard passes to put Boise on the OSU 5.
3Q: 5:11: OSU 34 — Boise State 14:Â OSU blocks the second punt of the day. This one bounces into Za’Carrius Greens view. He gathers and takes it to the house.
True freshman Jarrick Bernard make a name on special teams with the block.
3Q: 5:11: OSU 27 — Boise State 14:Â Special. Teams. Matter.
Block party
— Southwell (@JustinSouthwell) September 15, 2018
3Q: 5:19: OSU 27 — Boise State 14: Jordan Brailford must be hiding in Broncos’ backfield pre-snap.
3Q: 6:40: OSU 27 — Boise State 14:Â Cornelius finds Stoner on a crossing route. The shifty speedster lives up to that description and out-hustles multiple defenders to the end zone. Pokes answer to keep a two-score lead.
3Q: 7:04: OSU 20 — Boise State 14:Â Cornelius’ acrobatics to stay off of the ground are exposed on review. TC had an elbow down, will go as a 7-yard loss.
3Q: 8:37: OSU 20 — Boise State 14:Â Cornelius eludes pressure, rolls right and hits Dillon Stoner for a toe-tapped on the sideline to pick up 11 and the first down.
3Q: 9:18: OSU 20 — Boise State 14: A.J. Richardson makes a jaw-dropping catch that even OSU fans would appreciated. Broncos pull within 6.
Holding on Johnson forces OSU to kick for FG while Bundage offisides on 3rd keeps Boise on field and they get into the endzone. 10 point swing.
— Michael Doutey (@mike_doutey) September 15, 2018
3Q: 12:39: OSU 20 — Boise State 7:Â Rypien hangs in the pocket and takes a big hit from Jordan Brailford after connecting with Khalil Shakir for 19 yards.
Boise State has just 7 points, but the Broncos might not have any if their quarterback wasn't an absolute stud. Rypien has completed 19 of 25 passes for 172 yards. He's done all he can against #OkState's pressure. I would imagine the scouts are impressed.
— Cliff Brunt (@CliffBruntAP) September 15, 2018
3Q: 13:03: OSU 20 — Boise State 7:Â Matt Ammendola shows off that deep ball, splitting the uprights from 48 yards and it would have been good from 55.
3Q: 13:17: OSU 17 — Boise State 7: Cornelius almost has his first TD pass when he targets Dillon Stoner in the end zone, but it’s a little off-target. Stoner hauls it in but is out of bounds. Fourth down and 9.
3Q: 13:40: OSU 17 — Boise State 7: Cornelius rolls right and hits Jalen McCleskey for nice pass and catch for 18 yards.
3Q: 14:14: OSU 17 — Boise State 7: A 46-yard run by Justice Hill is called back for holding called on Tyron Johnson.
3Q: 14:30: OSU 17 — Boise State 7: Cornelius starts the second half by trying to showing that he can still sling it. Has Tylan Wallace 21 yards, then overthrows Wallace on a would-be score.
Halftime Thoughts
It was a tail of two quarters for Taylor Cornelius who looked timid in the first period before settling down in the second. The best offense for the Cowboys has been mostly the QB draw with a sprinkling of deep balls. The Oil Baron leads all rushers with 47 yards on 9 carries.
The Cowboy defense settled into its own rhythm. Calvin Bundage spent most of the second quarter running free to Brett Rypien. Jordan Brailford has been other-worldy and the Broncos’ OL headed to the locker room looking for answers.
OSU gets the ball back to start the third with a chance to take a commanding three-score lead.
OSU has all the momentul right now. It's important to score a touchdown coming out of the half for #okstate I'm really interested to see how Boise State adjusts in the second half of if Brailford and Bundage coninue to live in the backfield.
— Michael Doutey (@mike_doutey) September 15, 2018
End of 2nd Quarter |Â OSU 17 — Boise State 7
2Q: 0:08: OSU 17 — Boise State 7:Â Oklahoma State’s edge rushers continue to feast on Boise’s OL. That’s four sacks and six TFLs in the first half.
2Q: 2:12: OSU 17 — Boise State 7:Â Cowboys settled for 3 after making it to the Boise 5-yard line. Matt Ammendola makes it 15-straight dating back to last year.
2Q: 4:00: OSU 14 — Boise State 7: Taylor Cornelius is now OSU’s top rusher, doubling Justice Hill, and it’s been working.
I propose a new name for the Cornelius-led Oklahoma State offense: The shuck-and-chuck. Please hold your applause.
— Kyle Boone (@Kyle__Boone) September 15, 2018
2Q: 6:19: OSU 14 — Boise State 7:Â Two-straight runs for loss for Justice Hill put the Cowboys behind the chains. But Cornelius goes to Tyron Johnson for an man’s 35-yard catch.
2Q: 6:19: OSU 14 — Boise State 7:Â Justin Phillips eats up Alex Mattison on a 5-yard pass. Turnover on downs. Cowboy ball.
2Q: 7:00: OSU 14 — Boise State 7: Jordan Brailford is all over the place. He gets his second sack of the first half. Fourth and 6.
2Q: 8:43: OSU 14 — Boise State 7:Â Tough sledding for OSU’s red zone offense, but third try’s a charm as Cornelius barrels into the end zone to put the Cowboys up.
2Q: 9:59: OSU 7 — Boise State 7: Amen Ogbongbemiga blocks Boise’s punt. OSU ball at Boise’s 7-yard line.
Oklahoma State has the best special teams unit in the history of college football.
— Kyle Boone (@PFBoone) September 15, 2018
2Q: 10:43: OSU 7 — Boise State 7: Jordan Brailford continues to dominate Boise’s right tackle. Sacks Rypien and dislodges the ball. Boise recovers. Third and 21.
Jordan Brailford is ballin' today. He's lined up at end, middle linebacker, outside backer and his all over the place.
— Michael Doutey (@mike_doutey) September 15, 2018
2Q: 12:00:Â OSU 7 — Boise State 7: Calvin Bundage has been great against the running game. Had a couple of stuffs and just got Van Buren for a loss of 2.
2Q: 12:08:Â OSU 7 — Boise State 7:Â Justice Hill evens the scoreboard with a second effort and 8 yards, stumbling onto pay dirt.
Gotta take what you can get.
Thank god Justice Hill is so good he can dodge all of the unblocked defenders.
— Evan Epstein (@EvanEpstein60) September 15, 2018
2Q: 12:30:Â OSU 0 — Boise State 7: Cornelius finally connects on a deep ball to Tylan Wallace for 43 yards. First and goal.
#okstate For months, frequently asked questions: What if Cornelius falters during the first half of the Boise State game? How might Gundy/Yurcich respond? It's 3:08 p.m. now. What does this game look like at 5 o'clock?
— Bill Haisten ?? (@billhaisten) September 15, 2018
2Q: 14:20:Â OSU 0 — Boise State 7: Boise strikes first, going up 7-0 on a nice deep ball thrown to John Hightower. That was set up by how much Boise was getting on crossing routes and in the short passing game.
End of 1st Quarter |Â OSU 0 — Boise State 0:
1Q: 0:20: OSU 0 — Boise State 0: Brett Rypien continues to pick apart OSU on short and intermediate throws. Picks up 5 to bring up second and 5 as the clock runs out on Quarter 1.
1Q: 3:30:OSU 0 — Boise State 0: OSU offense sputters, Cornelius now 1 for 5 including two badly overthrown deep balls. Punt.
1Q: 5:21: OSU 0 — Boise State 0:Â OSU holds the Broncos to a field goal attempt in the red zone. A low snap makes for a dinger off the left upright. We’re still scoreless and OSU is not the only team with specialist woes.
1Q: 8:30: OSU 0 — Boise State 0: Boise goes for it on fourth-and-3 and gets 5. Broncos first down at OSU 29.
1Q: 10:19: OSU 0 — Boise State 0:Â Boise pulls out the first trick, a backwards pass. Could have been blown up for a loss if not for two missed tackles by OSU defenders.
Boise is called for a block-in-the-back penalty on that play, but flag is picked up.
Refs saw the replay on the big screen, realized they were wrong, and reversed an irreversible (yet bad) call
— Matt Amilian (@mattamilian) September 15, 2018
1Q: 12:29:Â OSU 0 — Boise State 0:Â OSU offense goes three-and-out. Hockett’s shanked punt gives the Broncos the ball at midfield.
OSU misses Zac Sinor. Hockett muffed a snap last week that lead to South Alabama points. He shanks his first punt today.
— Michael Doutey (@mike_doutey) September 15, 2018
1Q: 13:08: OSU 0 — Boise State 0: Oklahoma State defense holds strong on opening possession, Boise State punts to Dillon Stoner for fair catch at 27-yard line.
Big news from Stillwater: Boise State's All-MW senior cornerback Tyler Horton is out for today's game against Oklahoma State. Had undisclosed injury against UConn last week.
— Dave Southorn (@davesouthorn) September 15, 2018
Per #OKState radio broadcast, P Zach Sinor and backup center Deionte Noel remain out. Backup receiver Tracin Wallace (Tylan Wallace's brother) is also out.
— Mark Cooper (@mark_cooperjr) September 15, 2018
So it looks like Oklahoma State is now a 2.5-point underdog at home.
#OKState has moved to a 2.5-point underdog after opening as a 3-point favorite.
