Phil Forte Named 2016-17 NCAA Free Throw Champ

Phil Forte made 84 of his 88 free throw attempts during the 2016-17 NCAA season. On Monday he was named the free throw champ by the NCAA. I’m not sure why an organization would need to announce what was already statistically apparent (#math), but here we are.

Here is a look at the top 20 from last year.

Here are Forte’s splits for last year.

  • November: 30-31
  • December: 14-14
  • January: 19-22
  • February: 16-16
  • March: 5-5

He ended his career by not missing a free throw over his final 14 games.

At 95.5 percent, Forte bested Moe Iba’s single season Oklahoma State record (from 1961) of 92.6 percent. Interestingly, this is just the third time a Cowboy has been named NCAA statistical champion (Arlen Clark 82.5 percent from the free throw line in 1959 and Doug Gottlieb 8.8 assists per game in 1999).

Forte leaves Stillwater as the all-time leader in 3-pointers made and attempted and among the leaders in games played, points scored and free throw percentage.
