Poll Recap: Fans Value Historic Season over Consistency

Published

on

OSU is a (Camping World) bowl victory away from their third-straight 10-win season. While we were all hoping for more, it would still be a school record and a major accomplishment for the program.

Not surprisingly, there are plenty of fans (myself included) who are disappointed in the season. Some are so disappointed, they would trade this terrific three-year run for something else — two crummy years and an historic one.

Of the 2,411 people who voted, 1,350 say they would rather have one 13-win season over the three-straight 10-win seasons.

As close as the poll was, the responses were about as equally balanced.

“Yep. I’d only pick “B” if it had a championship included (not just for a CFP appearance).” – Alum in AZ

“Ten win seasons help recruiting and enable you to keep building towards greatness. Seven win seasons do nothing for you. Why be a one and done flash in the pan. Also, embarrassed for anyone only worried about OU.” – Run Power Often

“The thing to remember is two 7 win seasons might lead to a coaching change before the 13 win season.” – Chris Baker

“That’s an excellent question! But I chose option B for 1 reason. The feeling I had rushing OSUs football field after winning the Big 12 Championship in 2011 is a feeling I’ve never even came close to having in the last 3 years. So I’d take the 2012 and 2014 seasons two years in a row if it means getting that feeling from 2011 again.” – James Engel

Think of it this way. Would you rather have 2015-2017… or have 2012-2014 with a Big 12 title in 2013? That essentially what you’re choosing from here.

I remember the 2012 and 2014 seasons. They weren’t great. Bowl wins over Purdue and Washington to end the season were nice finishes, but both seasons left me wanting more.

I loved Engel’s argument (above) about how great that feeling of winning Bedlam and the Big 12 in 2011 was. It was an amazing feeling and so was the Fiesta Bowl win over Stanford. I wouldn’t trade that for anything. But I like winning 10 games a season. Would I like to win more? Of course. Do I want a seven-win season? Nope. You think losing three homes games is bad? Consider this season, only with Texas and Iowa State also being losses. No thank you.

On the flip side, let’s just take a moment to appreciate that we can even have this argument, instead of say… going 6-6 or 5-7 every year.
