Report: Oklahoma State Set to Hire Cory Patterson as Running Backs Coach

The staff turnover continues in Stillwater, as the Cowboys are expected to hire a new running backs coach.

Oklahoma State is expected to hire Cory Patterson, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz. Patterson was most recently the associate head coach and receivers coach at Purdue. Before his two seasons with the Boilermakers, Patterson coached running backs at Illinois.

John Wozniak had been the Cowboys’ running backs coach since 2017, coaching the likes of Justice Hill, Chuba Hubbard, Jaylen Warren and, most recently, Ollie Gordon to great success at OSU.

Patterson coached Chase Brown at Illinois, helping Brown become an All-American, Doak Walker finalist and the nation’s leader in 100-yard games for the 2022 season. In two seasons under Patterson, Brown rushed for 2,648 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Patterson was on the Illini’s staff from 2018 to 2022, starting at the tight ends coach before moving to running backs in 2021.

Patterson was also the head coach at Trinity Catholic in St. Louis. He was the Archdiocesan Athletic Association (AAA) Conference Coach of the Year all three seasons. The Titans went 21-2 in Patterson’s final two seasons. He was the offensive coordinator for Trinity in 2013 and 2014 and before that was an assistant coach at Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis, winning a state championship.

This is the second bit of coaching news that has happened Monday, as earlier in the day a report came out that OSU is set to hire Cowboy alums Cooper Bassett and Andrew Mitchell to coach the offensive line. This is all part of an overhaul of the Cowboys’ staff after the program parted ways with coordinators Kasey Dunn and Bryan Nardo after the season and hired Doug Meacham and Todd Grantham. Other reported offensive hires include DJ Tialavea coaching tight ends and Kevin Johns coaching quarterbacks.
