‘Some of the plays and throws that he made, you know, when you see that happening, you know what kind of guy they got.’

STILLWATER — Scott Frost knows what an NFL quarterback looks like, and he sounds confident that Oklahoma State has one.
Frost was the offensive coordinator at Oregon from 2013 to 2015. In 2014, Frost coached Marcus Mariota en route to the Duck winning the Heisman trophy.
After Oklahoma State beat Frost’s UCF squad 42-28 on Saturday, Frost said he’d be surprised if Mestemaker wasn’t playing in the same league as Mariota next season.
“I think their quarterback, I’ll be surprised if he’s in college next year,” Frost said. “I know they’re gonna want him to be, but some of the plays and throws that he made, you know, when you see that happening, you know what kind of guy they got.”
Mestemaker was efficient against the Knights, completing 19 passes for 304 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had an 11-yard rushing touchdown and for the first time this season, Mestemaker completed a game without a turnover.
He’s the Big 12 leader in pass yards per game, averaging 315 through his first five as a Cowboy. Longtime Arizona starter Noah Fifita is second with 292.7 yards a game.
On the season, Mestemaker has completed 16 passes at least 20 yards down the field, which leads the Big 12 and is tied for third nationally with Notre Dame’s CJ Carr. But Carr and the two quarterbacks ahead of Mestemaker (Alabama’s Keelon Russell and Oregon State’s Braden Atkinson) have played six games to Mestemaker’s five.
Among quarterbacks with at least 20 attempts of a pass of 20 or more yards, Mestemaker’s 64% completion percentage ranks second nationally behind Russell (66.7%).
Frost made note of the Knights sacking Mestemaker once on Saturday. With his quick release, that’s not something that happens a ton. It marked just the fourth time Mestemaker had been sacked all season despite having dropped back 181 times already, per PFF.
Mestemaker wasn’t the only thing Frost complimented about his trip to Stillwater.
Before the game got going, Frost peeked his head into one of the on-field suites and met with fans. After his first game in Stillwater, Frost noted Boone Pickens Stadium is a good college football environment.

“Hats off to Oklahoma State,” Frost said. “(Eric Morris has) done a good job of coming in here new. I’ve never been here before. That’s a cool environment. The people were really nice to us. So, he’s done a good job.”
