Son of a Sooner, Why Gavin Freeman Transferred to Oklahoma State
‘it was really a no-brainer where I wanted to go’
Gavin Freeman expects his dad to wear orange when he visits Boone Pickens Stadium this football season.
Son of former Oklahoma tight end Jason Freeman, Gavin Freeman, a receiver, transferred across Bedlam lines to Oklahoma State this offseason with two years of eligibility left entering his junior campaign. He spent the first two seasons of his career at OU.
“After seeing them the past however many years Coach [Mike] Gundy has been here, you’ve seen the program that they’ve had, it was really a no-brainer where I wanted to go just because of the culture here and Coach Gundy and everybody here,” Freeman said.
Freeman walked on to OU’s football team in 2022 after a successful preps career at Heritage Hall in Oklahoma City. He was a three-star prospect according to most recruiting services and even committed to Texas Tech early, but ultimately, he decided to play at his father’s alma-mater, even if it meant no scholarship. Despite being a walk-on, though, he still made a literal instant impact, scoring a 46-yard rushing touchdown the first time he touched the ball in the Sooners’ season opener against UTEP.
He was then put on scholarship before the 2023 season, and again, made an instant impact. In OU’s 2023 season opener against Arkansas State, Freeman returned a punt for an 82-yard TD. It was the first time in Freeman’s career that he handled a punt. He also caught a seven-yard TD in the game. He finished the opener of his sophomore season with 109 all-purpose yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Freeman’s opportunities dipped as the season progressed, though. On May 1, he officially entered the transfer portal. Only four days later, he was a Cowboy.
“I try not to like be into social media stuff and what people say, but most of [the reaction] is good, though,” Freeman said. “Everybody loves it — my family. It’s pretty cool. …
“[My dad] just wants whatever’s best for me. He says it’s my decision where I go. He’ll support whatever I do.”
Will his Sooner father support Freeman enough to don America’s Brightest Orange, though?
“For sure. He’ll probably have my jersey on.”
