St. John’s Officially Hires Ex-Arkansas Coach Mike Anderson; Boynton Staying

St. John’s moved swiftly (and somewhat blindly) in its coaching search to replace alumnus Chris Mullin, and Friday it became official what had been rumored and reported late Thursday: Mike Anderson will be the next head coach of the Johnnies.

That means barring an unexpected development, like Syracuse or Canisius or Colgate or Cornell unexpectedly having openings to coach their college basketball programs, Brooklyn native Mike Boynton isn’t bolting OSU to return to his home state to coach.

We suspected as much when Thursday, shortly after four-star guard Chris Harris Jr. committed to OSU, Boynton sent a mysterious (and promising) tweet into the atmosphere that translated to either Time to block out the noise…let’s work or time to put sunglasses on okurr there’s construction upcoming.

In two seasons at OSU, Boynton has gone 33-35 anchored by a 21-win season in Year One. With Harris joining the fold on Thursday, he has a top-20 recruiting class on the way for next season and is already off to a good start in 2020 with a top-10 class thanks to an early pledge from top-100 point guard Davonte Davis.

Anderson was fired from Arkansas in late-March after eight seasons at the helm of the program, where he achieved a 169-102 overall record.
