STILLWATER Within the first 18, maybe 24 hours, of taking over at Oklahoma State, Steve Lutz was on the phone with 2026 recruit Jalen Montonati.
On Wednesday, Lutz could finally celebrate the signing of the four-star son of former Cowboy Brian Montonati.
“That was the one we felt like we had to get,” Lutz said.
It’s safe to say Montonati backed up his ranking with his play on the court, earning him Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year honors twice.
“He is a very skilled player, he is a shot maker,” Lutz said. “As he continues to develop his body, he is just going to get better and better. He works extremely hard, he is competitive, and he’s won pretty much everywhere he’s been, so that is a good combination.”
As of Wednesday night, Oklahoma State’s three-man recruiting class ranks fourth according to the 247Sports Composite behind Kansas (four commits), Purdue (four) and Missouri (three).
Four-star Latrell Allmond, who ranks 27th overall and sixth among power forwards according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, headlines the class.
“He plays really hard, he’s a great story,” Lutz said. “You know, he’s transformed his body. He has transformed himself into just a really good player, but man, his motor and his will to win. … His is really, really high and I think he has a chance to come in and be a fantastic player.”
Four-star guard Parker Robinson, who ranks 116th nationally, rounds out the trio.
Lutz knew he wanted Robinson in Stillwater when he left the Overtime Elite League Combine last year.
“I think his best basketball is ahead of him, I really do,” Lutz said. “And I think he will fit well within our system.”
