Superlatives: Justice’s Big Day, Brailford Continues to Impress and More
A quick recap of Oklahoma State’s road win of the Kansas Jayhawks.
Oklahoma State bounces back from its home loss last week with a 48-28 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks. After the Cowboys basically dominated the first half, leading 24-7, KU tried to keep it close with 21 second half points. Chuba Hubbard sealed the deal with a fourth quarter touchdown and after KU was stopped on their ensuing drive, this one was in the books.
Let’s take a look at some of the superlatives from the Cowboys first road game.
MVP: Justice Hill
Hill was averaging just 11.5 carries through the first four games of the season. Well, that average jumped to 15.4 (right in Gundy’s sweet spot) today after a 31-carry performance from the junior running back. Hill made the most of these carries, rushing for 189 yards (6.1 yards per carry) and one touchdown.
Despite some injuries to the offensive line, they blocked pretty well in the running game. I’ll want to take a closer look tomorrow, but my initial reaction is a solid game from the big guys up front. However, Justice can do it himself if needed.
Loser: Oklahoma State Secondary
The Cowboy secondary allowed KU’s third string quarterback, Carter Stanley, to throw for 247 yards and three touchdowns with a 75 percent completion percentage. Now, Stanley has had some solid games in his Jayhawk career, but he’s only attempted seven passes this season and was hitting wide open receivers for big plays.
There seemed to be some confusion at times which led to blown coverages for OSU, and there were a few times were they were flat-out beat by Jayhawk receivers.
The Cowboys will need to make some improvements as they get set to take on several powerful passing attack in Big 12 play.
Most Improved: Taylor Cornelius
Corn Dog still missed a few throws in this one, but it was a big improvement from last week’s performance against Texas Tech. He threw for 312 yards and four touchdowns with a 75 percent completion percentage. He stood tall in the pocket and looked comfortable back there throughout pretty much the entire game. In addition, he dropped some absolute DIMES. Including this deep ball to Tyron.
And this beautiful ball.
I know it’s Kansas, and I shouldn’t overreact, but they have a couple solid players in their secondary in Hasan Defense and Corione Harris. Overall, I think Cornelius did a solid job of executing this week’s game plan.
Best Player on Defense: Jordan Brailford
Jordan Brailford finished this one with eight total tackles, including five tackles for loss and three sacks. He was an absolute monster for the Cowboys in this one and I think he’s going to continue to be against pretty much anyone he’s matched up against for the remainder of the season.
Also, this…
Also wild: #OKState has 24 sacks through five games. It had 30 for the entire season last year. Brailford with three today, seven for the year.

Biggest Hit: Landon Wolf
I think we have to look on the offensive side of the ball for the hit that Landon Wolf laid on a KU defender. This was awesome!
Catch of the Day: Tylan Wallace
TC underthrows this one to Tylan, but he does a great job of adjusting for the ball, coming back to it and making the catch over the defender. We’ve seen him do this on multiple occasions this season. He’s going to have an absolutely phenomenal career as a Cowboy.
I think his brother, and fellow OSU receiver Tracin Wallace, summed it up nicely.
@OfficialTylan2 Bro you ain’t had to do all that?

Interesting Stat
This tweet from the Tulsa World’s Mark Cooper on Cornelius.
From #OKState's postgame notes: Taylor Cornelius set an OSU record today with an average of 15.6 yards per attempt. The previous record of 15.5 was set by Mason Rudolph at Pittsburgh last year.

Most Depressing Stat of the Day: Darrion Daniels
Looks like the Cowboys will be without Daniels for the remainder of the season. The good new is though, since he only played in four games, he can redshirt and obtain another year of eligibility.
Mike Gundy said after the game Darrion Daniels will miss the rest of the season. Said he hadn’t thought about if Daniels will redshirt. #okstate
