Three Questions About Baylor Hoops with Kendall Kaut

Published

on

The Cowboys welcome the Baylor Bears to Stillwater on Tuesday, looking for revenge after a nasty beating in Waco just a couple of weeks ago.

Despite already facing off once this season, it’s always nice to get some insider info on the opponent. Kendall Kaut, Manager and writer for the Baylor SBNation site “Our Daily Bears” was kind enough to offer some insight and answers about the team.

There is no audio this week.

Phillip Slavin: Baylor has had some close losses during Big 12 Play, including four by three points or less. What’s been the Bears’ biggest reason for not being able to close out close games?

Kendall Kaut: “I don’t think it’s anything unique to late in the game, but rather that in a close game the Bears’ inability to shoot kills them. The Bears couldn’t make free throws or shots against West Virginia. Baylor missed a ton of good looks against Kansas. And Baylor took two bad shots against Oklahoma. Against TCU, the Bears went 1-of-12 from deep.”

PS: In their last meeting, Baylor overwhelmed OSU in the second half behind a career day from Manu Lecomte. This one is in Stillwater. Who has been the Bears’ best player on the road this season and who could “go off” this weekend?

KK: “On the road, likely Manu, but the Bears have been so bad on the road that it’s hard to say. He’s the best player, and he had a superb day against Oklahoma. If not for Trae Young’s best major-opponent game, Oklahoma would be three games behind Kansas.”

As fas as which player could have a career day on Tuesday? Other than Manu, probably King McClure. Baylor mounted a wild comeback against Louisville last season in the Battle 4 Atlantis title. The Bears were down by 20 in the first half, and McClure exploded in route to a comeback victory. Nuni Omot also can get going from deep. He went 6-of-6 from three against Oklahoma.

PS: What is the Bears’ biggest weakness?

KK: “Three-point shooting. And it’s not close. Baylor went 1-of-12 against TCU, 4-of-20 against Kansas, and 5-of-21 against Wichita State. The Bears hit 15 three-point shots against Oklahoma. It took five Big 12 games to do that. If Lecomte can hit threes, the Bears are a top 25 team. But he hasn’t done that enough this season.”
