Travis Wittlake to take on Trent Hidlay in the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic

Future Oklahoma State Cowboy Travis Wittlake is set to take on Trent Hidlay Sunday March 25th in the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic at the Fitzgerald Field House on the University of Pittsburgh campus. The event, dubbed the “Rose Bowl” of wrestling is an All-Star dual pitting the Pennsylvania All-Star Team against the USA All-Star Team.

Wittlake, out of Marshfield, Oregon, is the No. 2 pound-for-pound recruit in this class according to FloWrestling and is coming in to Oklahoma State with some pretty high expectations.

His opponent, Trent Hidlay, is the No. 2 recruit at 170 pounds behind Wittlake and the brother of this year’s NCAA runner up at 157 pounds, Hayden Hidlay. Hidlay will be wrestling with his brother at NC State under former Cowboy Pat Popolizio.

This is an intriguing match for Wittlake. He’s an incredible wrestler, a world medalist with a ton of talent, but being out of Oregon and not from a big name wrestling school he doesn’t really get tested in the regular season.

A guy like Hidlay in Pennsylvania definitely does. With that you always wonder what kind of development he gets comparative to a recruit like Anthony Montalvo. Montalvo is from a high school wrestling powerhouse and wrestles a gauntlet of a schedule as he took on multiple nationally ranked wrestlers this season.

FloWrestling had a great technical breakdown of what to expect here.

I expect Wittlake to win, but this one should be fun. If you have a subscription to Flo you can watch there. I’ll provide a recap next week.
