Kentucky beat out Oklahoma State, Kansas and LSU for the services of Georgia point guard transfer Sahvir Wheeler on Monday. Wheeler announced his decision with Jeff Goodman of Stadium in a livestream announcement with The Field of 68.

OSU was considered to be in the thick of it for Wheeler along with Kentucky but was ultimately unable to dissuade him from joining another SEC foe.

Wheeler joins a Kentucky team that on paper looks to be set with a starting backcourt of TyTy Washington (PG), Kellan Grady (SG) and Dontaie Allen (SF). But Wheeler ranked first among players in major conferences last season in assists per game, thus potentially creating a dynamic where he could compete for a starting job or slot in as the best backup point guard in the sport.

OSU made a hard run at Wheeler in large part because point guard is an area of weakness on the roster. Bringing back Avery Anderson and signing Bryce Thompson are huge offseason moves, and Isaac Likekele’s return is significant, but the Pokes are losing Cade Cunningham and have not added another true lead guard capable of creating in the way Cunningham was.

It’s unclear if they will, either. Right now OSU has just one scholarship to offer after signing Thompson and OSU has been linked to numerous players who don’t play point guard.
