It seemed likely last week that the decision for Virginia QB transfer Brennan Armstrong would come down to either Oklahoma State or to Wisconsin. Now there’s a new twist that, if you’re into reading tea leaves (this is a blog, what else do we have to do?!) suggests that OSU may now be in pole position.

That’s because over the weekend, Wisconsin landed its own quarterback out of the portal as Oklahoma outgoing gunslinger Nick Evers, a former four-star recruit who went one-and-done with the Sooners, announced on Saturday that he will transfer to the Badgers. Evers was a top-10 QB prospect in the 2022 class and with outgoing starter Graham Mertz in the portal, his pedigree likely puts him in position to start early in his Wisconsin career.

Which of course isn’t particularly relevant to OSU except for the fact that Armstrong was expected to visit both OSU and Wisconsin, with both schools implied as the favorites to land him pending those visits, per On3.com. With Wisconsin landing a QB, that would seemingly take them out of the picture or at best make landing him much more difficult.

Armstrong is a lefty with a cannon for an arm who passed for 9,034 yards during his time at Virginia along with 58 touchdowns and 35 interceptions. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound talent is plenty mobile, too, as he rushed for 552 yards three seasons ago, 251 yards two seasons ago and 371 yards this season to go with 20 combined rushing touchdowns in that span. Notably, he led an aerial attack in 2021 that ranked second nationally in pass yards per game.

With four-year starting QB Spencer Sanders entering the transfer portal and OSU thin at QB behind presumptive starter Garret Rangel, the Cowboys have shown interest in Armstrong to at the very least bolster their depth for 2023 and potentially give Rangel competition for the starting job.
