Three Things that Should Excite You for Cowboy Basketball

A preview of what to expect this season from Cowboy hoops.

Oklahoma State has its home opener tonight against UTSA, and although the Pokes are coming off a tough loss against Charlotte, there are many reasons to be excited, or at least intrigued, by this team. Here are three major reasons why the Cowboys deserve your attention this season.

1. Mike Boynton Part 2

Head coach Mike Boynton proved why he earned the job last year, and he led the Cowboys to a number of marquis wins in conference play. You know that any Boynton-coached team is going to be gritty. And the best part? The Cowboys were picked to finish last in the Big 12. There are no expectations for this team from everyone outside of Stillwater, and as Coach Boynton showed at Big 12 media day, this team is going to have a significant chip on their shoulder headed into 2018. Would you have it any other way?

2. Size in the Frontcourt

Last year, the Cowboys had four players over 6-7 (and one of those was Lucas N’Guessan). This year, the team has six, and three of those six are above 6-9. Yankuba Sima was the first adequate big man in a long, long time. And if you think about it, the Pokes haven’t had a ton of really talented big men in the past couple of years (Marshall Moses? Phillip Jurick?). But this size should help the Cowboys this season, especially when they start conference play and face the many talented front courts in the Big 12.

3. New Faces

The Cowboys have a number of new players who will play significant roles this year. Freshmen Yor Anei and Isaac Likekele got the starting nod last week against Charlotte, and Kentrevious Jones, Maurice Calloo, Duncan Demuth and Luke Major all got time. In fact, six of the nine players who received time last week were freshmen. Additionally, three of the Cowboys’ best players on the roster — Curtis Jones, Mike Cunningham and Michael Weathers — are yet to play. Jones will be eligible starting in the spring; Cunningham is expected to play soon after recovering from injury, and Weathers was cleared to return to the team last week.
