The subject of the next episode of our countdown is a returning junior ready to embrace a full-time starting role.

How he got to OSU

The three-star safety from held 13 Division I offers including LSU, Cal, Nebraska and Washington. As a senior at Alief Taylor High School (Houston, Texas), Edison-McGruder tailled 79 total tackles (36 solo), an interception, a sack and two forced fumbles. He was the No. 27 safety in the 2015 class according to 247 Sports.

What he’s done in Stillwater

Edison-McGruder played in 12 games as a true freshman in 2015 and has been a solid contributor since. The versatile safety was moved all over the field by Glenn Spencer last year. He had starts at strong safety, free safety and finally at Star linebacker in the Alamo Bowl. At the beginning of spring practice, Mike Gundy announced that he would transition to the Star role permanently.

Role in 2017

With Jordan Burton’s time in Stillwater finished, Edison-McGruder is part of a two-headed monster at the Star with true sophomore Calvin Bundage. Glenn Spencer called the pair his “1A and 1B” at the hybrid linebacker spot and conceded that with Edison-McGruder’s move to Star full-time, it might be his best position on defense.

Noteworthy stats and highlights

Edison-McGruder had a career-high seven tackles tackles against UTSA as a true freshman in 2015 and had multiple tackles in 11 games last year.
