100 Days of Summer: Get to Know No. 73 Teven Jenkins

on

It’s hard to believe that we’re one-fourth of the way through this countdown but that just means we’re one step closer to kickoff. Next up is a young offensive lineman who’s already transforming his body and could be ready to compete for reps in his second year.

How he got to OSU

A three-star recruit from Topeka High School, Jenkins was the top-rated offensive lineman from the state of Kansas in the 2016 class according to 247Sports. He turned down an offer to play one hour west at Kansas State to move to Stillwater. He favored the Cowboys over offers from K-State, Nebraska, Louisville and Missouri.

What he’s done in Stillwater

Nothing on the field, save for his reps in this past spring game. But Jenkins has definitely been putting in the work. During his redshirt year, Jenkins has added 15 pounds. As a 6-foot-6, 295-pound prospect, he was raw potential. Now Rob Glass and Co. have the young tackle up to 310. It’s not just the number, Jenkins looks like a different player thanks to Rob Glass and Co.

Role in 2017

Jenkins vying for meaning reps this fall is unlikely, especially now that Cal grad-transfer Aaron Cochran is set to take up the left tackle slack. Expect to see him on special teams and to be somewhere behind the likes junior-college transfer Arlington Hambright, Shane Richards and with fellow redshirt freshman Dylan Galloway on the depth chart.

Mike Gundy did mention his desire to swap out O-linemen like D-linemen following the Alamo Bowl.

“I think we can have up to eight linemen next year that can play,” said Gundy. “I would love to play a first group, then after the fourth series put another group in and play. We may be able to do that. We’ll see.”

If that comes to fruition, expect Jenkins to factor in there somewhere. At the least, he and Galloway provide potential pillars on the line moving forward.

Noteworthy stats and highlights

A dominant downfield blocker in high school, Jenkins’ man rarely remained upright until the whistle blew. Some work on technique and continued strengthening should allow him to display his mean streak against Big 12 competition sooner rather than later.
