3 Things to Look for in Fall Camp

Only 30 days until the Cowboys kick off the season at Central Michigan. The start of football season officially kicks off today, as the Cowboys open fall camp. The excitement can’t be contained.

There are several important storylines to look for, and here are three things to keep an eye on as fall camp develops.
1. Who will emerge at running back?
Chris Carson had an excellent summer, as did Rennie Childs, who feels like it’s his time to take over the job in Stillwater. It feels like a pretty tight competition, and it should only ramp up now that fall camp is officially in swing. Don’t be surprised to see Todd Mays and Chris Carson push Childs for carries early in the season.
2. Will the defensive tackle position solidify as the season approaches?
Vili Leveni’s injury was a devastation to an already depleted and inexperienced defensive line. Now, the Cowboys will have to replace the production of Ofa Hautau and James Castleman with new blood. Motekiai Maile and Vincent Taylor should take over most of the reps, but developing young talent in Darrion Daniels and Taaj Bakari will be key to stopping the opponent’s running game.
3. Is Mason Rudolph going to build off last season’s momentum?
Everyone knows the story about Rudolph. He has had a full offseason in spring and summer to prepare, mentally and physicially, for the starting job. Heading into fall camp, he should get all the reps and has had a year to grasp Mike Yurcich’s offense. Can he take another step forward this season and help the Cowboys return to Big 12 title contention?
