Report: Mike Gundy Turning Down Lucrative $42 Million Tennessee Offer to Remain at Oklahoma State

Mike Gundy is staying at Oklahoma State.

According to Brett McMurphy, Gundy, who was expected to mull over the Tennessee job until at least Wednesday, has turned down an offer from the Vols and will continue to coach the Cowboys.

Gundy [unofficially] confirmed the news himself on Twitter.

Gundy is turning down a pretty big offer, too. According to McMurphy, Tennessee extended a lucrative 6-year, $42 million offer to Gundy, who met with Tennessee officials on Tuesday. That amount would have made him the fourth-highest paid coach in college football with an average annual salary of $7 million, just ahead of Ohio State’s Urban Meyer.

Although news of sudden Tennessee interest on Tuesday was certainly surprising — to me, to fans, and to OSU administration — given the recent comments he made to the Tulsa World, this result shouldn’t be all that surprising.

“I’m rooted here,” Gundy said. “Knock on wood, if you’re doing good, you get calls. I get calls every year. But my stability here is more than it ever has been.”

“I’m very happy in the situation I’m in,” Gundy continued. “But one guy said, ‘Well what if they call and give you a six-year deal at nine million dollars a year?’ I don’t know. I’d probably have to listen. You know? Something crazy.”

It’s not quite nine million a year, what Tennessee was offering, but the point remains: Mike Gundy is staying at Oklahoma State. For life.
