Virginia Tech Defensive Coordinator Thinks OSU is the Best Offense He’s Ever Faced
Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster said Oklahoma State’s offense might be the best offense the Hokies have seen during his tenure.
Foster, who’s been at VT since 1987 and the Hokies’ defensive coordinator since 1995, understands the challenge of defending one of the country’s most explosive units.
“This will be the most prolific offense we have played and maybe have played in my time here,” Foster said. “So we’ve got a tremendous challenge, but we’ve got a tremendous opportunity.”
The Hokies will have to take on the third-best scoring offense in the country and try and stop seniors Mason Rudolph and James Washington. Additionally, they will be tasked with keeping up with the Cowboys’ rapid tempo.
Virginia Tech’s opponents (excluding Delaware, an FCS opponent) have averaged 74.3 plays a game, which would rank 43rd on its own. The Cowboys, who average 80 plays a game, rank 7th in the same category. Although tempo is prevalent in the Big 12, it’s not as much in the ACC. That could give the Cowboys an advantage against the Hokies.
“They’re going real fast,” sophomore safety Reggie Floyd said. “You’ve got to be conditioned. You’re going to be out of breath, but you’ve got to push yourself to that limit and get ready for the next play.”
The Cowboys and Hokies kick off in the Camping World Bowl on Dec. 28 in Orlando, Florida, at 4:15 p.m.
