Former OSU Wrestler Jordan Oliver Takes Out Olympic Gold Winner Toghrul Asgarov

Former Oklahoma State wrestler Jordan Oliver made a big time come back to wrestling last night as he took out Olympic champion Toghrul Asgarov of Azerbaijan at the Beat the Streets Benefit in NYC.

The two time NCAA champ was suspended by the USADA in fall and hasn’t wrestled since.

The match itself was good, but marred by controversy with the mats. It was an outdoor match on mats made specifically for the event and they weren’t good. In every match wrestlers were sliding around like they were on ice. Social media deemed the issues with the mat #matgate.

It ended in a 3-3 tie with Oliver winning on criteria. Oliver got up early with a TD and fended off Asgarov’s comeback attempt giving up a few single point scores, but avoiding any big point moves to hold on.

The interesting debate that has already been brewing, but is now even more hyped up is should USA Wrestling allow Oliver a shot at the World Team? His suspension from wrestling has been lifted, but he wasn’t able to qualify for the World Team Trials this weekend because he was still suspended during all the qualifying events.

His weight, 65 KG, really doesn’t have a dominant clear cut favorite and many believe he would win the World team spot if he were allowed a shot at it.

It’s probably not going to happen. USA Wrestling likely won’t be giving him a shot to qualify for the World Team, but it’s hard to argue it wouldn’t potentially benefit Team USA to have him out there.
