Daily Bullets (August 15) – Cornelius Pulling Away from the Pack, LaDarren Brown Harkens Back to a Cowboy Great
PopCorn for the Show
Bobby A. says to shut it down, Taylor “Corndog” Cornelius has continued to lock down the quarterback spot in camp and it’s not even close.
Sorry for the media and fans that went in thinking either Hawaii graduate transfer Dru Brown was the next Baker Mayfield or that freshman Spencer Sanders was ready to take over. I like both those guys and they have played well in fall camp. They haven’t played as well as the 6-6, 232 pound and athletic Cornelius, who has loads of experience running the offense and the backing of every veteran Cowboy in that locker room. Both of those are powerful tools when the others you possess include a strong arm, track speed, and a mental capacity that has already earned two degrees at Oklahoma State and is on his way to another.
In the first scrimmage Cornelius moved the offense, had big plays (64-yard touchdown run and a 64-yard touchdown pass to Tylan Wallace), and few mistakes with one interception but it wasn’t all his fault. [GoPokes]
The biggest disclaimer not noted here is that these are takes from mid-August, comments about bright orange vs. bright orange. How you transition from being the career backup, from corndog to top dog will say it all.
Finding Touches
LaDarren Brown, one of four horsemen in the Cowboy backfield, is finding ways to impact Cowboy Football in a crowded depth chart: returning kickoffs.
“It’s something I look forward to, and hopefully we can return some kicks for touchdowns. I don’t know the last time OSU had one, probably Tyreek Hill. So it’s time to get the returns going and open that back up for us.”
His first two years at OSU, Brown wore the same No. 24 jersey as Hill did in his lone season with the Cowboys. But this season, Brown is going back to his roots — in more ways than one — with his change to No. 7.
“That was the number I had growing up, my Little League number,” Brown said. “Also, Tatum Bell, he wore No. 7 here. He played running back and he came from my part of town (DeSoto, Texas). I thought it’s pretty cool to have the same number as him, too.
“It’s always good to go back to your roots.” [NewsOK]
Well go ahead and set the bar for yourself, No. 7.

Classy move by the Texas coach in today’s society.
I heard former Texas DB John Bonney will likely play for Texas Tech as a grad transfer. Texas football coach Tom Herman could have blocked the transfer to a conference opponent. When I asked why Herman did not limit Bonney's options, I was told, "He just wants John to be happy."
