Daily Bullets (Nov 3) – Chuba Hubbard Adjusting to College Football, Rushing the Field at BPS

Happy Gameday friends, you only get so many of these a year so drink up.

Where I Come From

In a fun piece diving into Chuba Hubbard’s history was some compelling reasoning for his redshirt last year (and a pretty funny comment on his hockey career).

…(W)hen he got to OSU, he had to adjust to the differences. The game itself was different, of course, but so was the competition. Hockey is the biggest youth sport in Canada — “I tried it a couple times,” Hubbard said, “but I can’t stop very good” — so even though he played for a top prep program at Bev Facey Community High in the Edmonton suburb of Sherwood Park, he wasn’t regularly facing opponents with the size or the speed that prep players from American high schools often see.

While J.D. King played as a true freshman last season, Hubbard did not.

“Going into the season … I was like, ‘Yeah, I can play,'” Hubbard said. “Now that I look back at it, I think I’m really fortunate that I didn’t.” [NewsOK]

That makes a ton of sense – think about King’s high school competition compared to Hubbard’s.

Also – it’s a bit grainy but I found some of Hubbard’s hockey tapes on the Canadian version of 247:

Fly or Fall

Rushing the field in Stillwater is no joke – it’s a long way down. Unfortunately, some fans learned the hard way last week.

According to a university spokesman, it is believed that at least four Oklahoma State students sustained leg injuries when they jumped over the stadium’s front-row rail and onto the turf.

From the rail to the field, there is a drop of about 8½ feet. In the heat of the moment, a 19-year-old kid might believe he or she is bulletproof and that an 8½-foot drop isn’t substantial.

It’s actually really substantial, and at the end of the drop is a hard landing.

After OSU clinched the 2011 Big 12 title by defeating Oklahoma in Stillwater, several people were injured at the end of that 8½-foot drop. One man sustained a serious neck injury.

If an OSU fan insists on celebrating a home win by dancing on the turf, the smart play is to turn your back to the field, grasp the rail with your hands and lower yourself to the turf. Do not jump. No celebration is worth the risk of a fractured bone. [TulsaWorld]

God made stairs for a reason, fam. Let’s just stick with that.

I’m way out on the Fisher Price sticker of the sailor bear… that’s more of a badge on the pants type of logo.

Baylor QB is back but take heed of Ragusa’s warning if we see the backup (and historical context if we see the third-team true freshman).
