Transferring QB John Kolar Joining Iowa State Program
The former 4-star has found a landing spot in Ames.
Outgoing Oklahoma State quarterback John Kolar — a former four-star prospect from Norman North High School who signed with the Cowboys in the 2015 recruiting class — will officially finish his career at Iowa State.
Kolar will join his brother, Charlie, a tight end, in Ames, America.
“Beyond excited to announce my commitment to finish my academic and athletic career at Iowa State University,” Kolar said on Twitter. “The opportunity to play alongside my brother in a program as special as this one was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. Can’t wait to get started. #CyclONENation”
As a freshman this past season for the Cyclones, Charlie reeled in 11 receptions for 137 yards receiving and found the end zone three times — including in consecutive games in October against West Virginia and Texas Tech.
The elder Kolar was on campus from 2015-2018 and was never able to work his way up the QB depth chart. He sat behind Mason Rudolph and Taylor Cornelius for much of his college career, and managed just one completed pass for 8 yards and 2 rushing attempts that went for a total of 18 yards.
Iowa State is expected to lose redshirt senior quarterback Kyle Kempt this offseason, and while freshman Brock Purdy appears to be the QB of the future, Kolar could provide depth and experience at the position. In return, Iowa State can offer him a fresh start outside of Stillwater.
