Redshirt Tracker: Four Freshmen See the Field in Loss to Texas

An update on the newbies on the edge of burning their redshirts.

Four weeks in to the 2019 college football season, we’re gaining a little clarity on the newbies who will and won’t be mainstays in the rotation.

After a Big 12-opening loss to Texas a week ago, we saw for a second consecutive week four freshmen play, signaling that it’s likely they’ll be burning redshirts *officially* at some point this season barring injury. Surprisingly, three of those four are defensive players — Trace Ford, Jayden Jernigan and Thomas Harper — and the fourth is punter Tom Hutton. Harper’s contributions have primarily come on special teams.

Here’s an update to our season-long tracker of who has and hasn’t played this season as we monitor newbies eligible for the NCAA rule that allows for players to play in up to four games while maintaining a redshirt.

(Note: we’re only tracking true freshmen and excluding all other classifications including junior college transfers and traditional transfers.)
