TRANSFER PORTAL TRACKER

The Cowboys’ new coaching staff has been hard at work in the leadup to Christmas, bringing in all sorts of talent via the transfer portal.

This past weekend in particular was filled with news. The “Dead Period” started Monday, meaning in-person visits will stop for the rest of the month, but members of the Cowboys’ new staff have already sent out some more bat symbols Monday morning.

We’ll continue to keep things updated as OSU continues to mine the portal, but here is a recap of OSU commits from the weekend.

Oscar Hammond, TE, North Texas

The Cowboys are brining an Oklahoman back to his home state with the addition of Oscar Hammond.

Out of Collinsville, Hammond spent two seasons at UCO before playing for the Mean Green. In his first season at the Division-I level, Hammond caught 19 passes for 238 yards and a score. UNT listed him at 6-foot-3, 236 pounds this past season. Hammond also reported portal offers to Arizona, UCLA and others.

Hammond was the second tight end the Cowboys pulled from the portal after adding Central Arkansas transfer Jordan Owens. But, as we’ll get to later, the Pokes apparently didn’t stop there.

Kyran Duhon, DL, UTEP

A Conference USA All-Freshman selection in 2024, Kyran Duhon made 43 tackles, including seven sacks, in his first season of college football.

Out of Houston, Duhon was listed at 6-2, 250 pounds. Went back and found this quote from the season from UTEP coach Scotty Walden:

“I was just watching the tape of this game, and those guys are 330, 340, 350 (pounds) across the board, and Kyran might be a little on the shorter side, but he’s getting under those guys and creating knockback at the point of attack. Just so impressed with who he is as a person. He’s so consistent, and the kid cares. He cares about his craft. He cares about being at his best every single day. He doesn’t have the mentality like a freshman, and the moment’s never too big for him.”

JK Johnson, CB, LSU

JK Johnson is a former blue-chip recruit who has battled through injuries in his career. He could end up being a massive get for the Cowboys.

Out of St. Louis, Johnson was the No. 50 overall player in the 2021 247Sports Composite ranking, making him the No. 3 corner in the class. He initially chose Ohio State over offers from Georgia, Clemson, Florida, Michigan, Oregon, USC and others.

He played two games as a true freshman in Columbus before suffering a shoulder injury. As a redshirt freshman in 2022, he played in 12 games and made five starts, logging 20 tackles on the year. He then transferred to LSU but suffered a leg injury in camp and missed the entire 2023 season. He played in 10 games for the Bayou Bengals in 2024.

Louie Canepa, OL, New Mexico State

New OSU co-offensive line coach Andrew Mitchell will be super familiar with Louie Canepa, a 6-foot-4, 320-pound lineman who will follow Mitchell from New Mexico State to Stillwater.

Canepa made starts at right tackle and right guard for New Mexico State this past season, playing 543 offensive snaps. He was just a redshirt sophomore in 2024. He made 10 starts for the Aggies as a redshirt freshman in 2023, as New Mexico State won 10 games for the first time since 1960.

Mordecai McDaniel, S, Charlotte

Another defensive back with Power Five experience, Mordecai McDaniel played under new OSU defensive line coach Ryan Osborn at Charlotte and under new OSU defensive coordinator Todd Grantham at Florida.

Listed at 6-1, 200 pounds with the 49ers this past season, McDaniel made 43 tackles, including two tackles for loss and a sack. He also had an interception and three pass breakups.

247Sports considered McDaniel the No. 222 player in the 2020 recruiting class. He chose Grantham and Florida over offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Penn State, Tennessee, Michigan, LSU and others. He played in 24 games in two seasons with the Gators, making 19 tackles and intercepting a pass before spending two seasons at the junior college level and then heading to Charlotte.

Tyler Brumfield, OL, Snow College

There are a growing number of ties between OSU and Snow College, a JUCO in Utah, and the latest example of that is 6-foot-6, 315-pound offensive lineman Tyler Brumfield.

Brumfield announced his commitment to the Cowboys on Sunday night. He also took visits to Arizona and Coastal Carolina while announcing offers to Colorado State, New Mexico State (when Mitchell was still the coach), UTSA, UConn, Arkansas State and others.

Here are his highlights from his sophomore season at Snow:

OSU Reportedly Set to Sign Two More

But wait, there’s more.

247Sports’ McClain Baxley reported on Sunday that OSU is expected to add Purdue transfer wide receiver Shamar Rigby and Utah State tight end transfer Will Monney.

Rigby: a 6-foot-3, 187-pound true freshman for the Boilermakers in 2024, Rigby caught 11 passes for 113 yards. Originally out of Florida, Rigby was the No. 756 player in the 247Sports Composite ranking for 2024. He chose Purdue over offers to Iowa State, Kansas State, Nebraska, Cincinnati, Kentucky and others.

Monney: Monney would be the third tight end the Cowboys grabbed out of the portal. He spent the past two seasons at Utah State working under new OSU tight end coach DJ Tialavea. As a true freshman in 2023, Mooney played in 12 games, making one start. As a 6-4, 230-pound redshirt freshman in 2024, Monney caught 11 passes for 138 yards and a score.
