The Cowgirls didn’t shoot particularly well in the first half, but they did enough of the other things to keep the Wildcats at bay. Then they caught fire in the third quarter and left the Wildcats in their rear view.

No. 20 Oklahoma State defeated Arizona 83-64, reaching 20 wins for the second time in Jacie Hoyt’s three-year tenure.

Both teams actually came out of the gate shooting well. The Cowgirls started 4-of-6 while the Wildcats stared 4-of-7 before both teams cooled off. In the first half, OSU shot 43.3% from the field and went just 1-for-9 from deep while Arizona shot 46.4 % but did go 3-for-7 from 3.

The Cowgirls went on a 10-0 run early in the second to take a 28-19 lead. OSU was able to keep the Wildcats at arm’s length thanks to a decisive advantage in fastbreak points and at the charity stripe and took a 37-29 lead into the locker room. The Cowgirls were 11-0 in transition points and 10-of-14 on free throws compared to Arizona’s 0-for-2.

The Cowgirls caught fire in the third quarter, starting 5-of-7 including their first two deep balls out of the break, and rattled off a 10-0 run to push their lead to 52-36 and then used another 8-0 run to push the lead to 64-44 at the end of the quarter. OSU shot 11-of-16 (68.8%) and made both of its 3-pointers in the third to go into the final frame up 20.

Four Cowgirls scored in double digits led by Micah Gray’s 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Stailee Heard hit her average, pouring in 17 on 12 shots and a game-high nine rebounds.

A pair of OSU bigs chipped in 10 a piece. Tenin Magassa had hers with seven rebounds and a block while Praise Egharevba’s 10 were a career-high off the bench. She also had five boards.

Arizona forward Isis Beh scored a season-high 24 points, but the Wildcats’ top scorers were a nonfactor.

Arizona’s leading scorer coming in, Jada Williams, left the game scoreless after seven minutes with an injury. And the Cowgirls were able to slow down the Wildcats’ No. 2 scorer, Breya Cunningham, who totaled just two points and fouled out in 15 minutes of floor time.

Although they caught fire in the third, the Cowgirls did all the other things to win through the game. OSU scored 19 points off 16 Arizona turnovers and more than doubled the Wildcats in fastbreak points (31-9). The Cowgirls also outrebounded Arizona 37-28 and held a 19-11 advantage on the offensive glass which resulted in a 13-9 edge in second-chance points

With the win, the Cowgirls improve to 20-4 and 10-3 in the Big 12 which keeps OSU one game out of the lead as of writing. They have just five conference games left and will take care of two of them on this upcoming road trip. OSU plays at 4 p.m. Saturday at BYU and then will stay in Utah for an 8 p.m. tipoff Tuesday at Utah. The Utes are another one of the six teams in a logjam for the conference lead.
